need advice..95 Avalon XLS; 178k; $4k
Hello,
First post to this newsgroup however, have been reading for a while and I
know you guys will have some good advice for me.
I am in the process of looking at buying my friend's 1995 Avalon XLS (he
got a new job with a company car); 178,000 miles; extremely excellent
condition. He is talking right now about $4,000 dollars? What do you guys
think? I am going to take it to my mechanic this weekend, is there anything
in particular that I should have the mechanic look for in a Avalon with this
kind of mileage? Have you guys heard about any reoccurring problems with
this model and things to be skeptical about with these miles.
I appreciate the advice.
Paul.

Paul, be sure and take the car on the freeway and drive at 65. See if
the wind noise bothers you. (I own the same car, and agree with many
others that the wind noise is a bit excessive).
The only problem that I've encountered with my '95 XL is with the
power windows. These have a way of failing; in my case , in the closed
position. Aside from that, I've had no problems with my car (115k
miles)

Make sure the rear windows function.
My 1995 Avalon XLS has 225,000 miles and rolling strong!
Price seems fair. I'm getting offers of $2,000 from buy here pay here
lots and mine has a rebuilt title. :-)

I have heard some things about wind noise being a problem, I'll check it
out, thanks.
Do you know anything about the average life of a Avalon transmission?

I own a black 95 Avalon XLS with 152000 miles.
Problem : very minor oil leaks from rear valve cover (a few drips here
and there). Power steering leaks close to the pump. Both has not been
fixed, but it is not a major problem. Power window still working fine.
Paint is peeling off every plastic component(bumpers, door handle,
side mirror housing etc).
I managed to reduce the wind noise by installing those window air
deflector (maybe this is the wrong name). Its this plastic thing that
is installed outside the window.
Everything else is great ! Car is solid, does not rattle and handles
well for a full size car.

Paul,
Be sure to have the mechanic check the steering rack for leaks, as
well as the pump. You may also have leaky valve cover gaskets (the
back one is a bear to replace).
Others have mentionned the wind noise and power windows. If the
windows all work, run them down once every few days so they don't
stick to the rubber and apply some silicone gel lubricant to the
weatherstrips every few months.
If the thing's had any kind of regular maintenance it should have at
least another 100k left in it.
I had occasion to do a safety check on a 98 V6 Camry at the dealership
where I work today--similar drivetrain to your Avalon. This thing had
264k miles on it and ran like a new car. Had a little seepage from
the trans pan, but no other problems at all. So much for premature
engine failure due to sludge on 98 V6 Toyotas.

Ok so the engine is good but these guys are complaining about power
windows, paint coming off, leaks..... all kinds of stuff.
My father's 88 Camry, albeit with less miles, has virtually zero
problems and looks new inside and out.

Art, I believe you. I'm one of the ones with the power window problems
on my '95 Avalon. I still have my '79 Celica. It still looks like new;
(never in an accident, etc.)And it had no problems with windows,
obviously. (Only problems it has were with the clutch slave and master
cyl's. I just had my second clutch installed at 170,000 mi.)
The Celica's 20R gets me only 22 mpg on the freeway, compared to the
Avalon's V6, which gives me 27.5 mpg. Those computers must be doing
something right, huh?
Art, enjoy your Camry.

Well I bought the Avalon and although it is a little early I think it is a
GREAT car!!!(although my left rear window does not lower!)
Kind of funny actually the way this post has progressed because I actually
sold my 88 Camry to help pay for the 95 Avalon
(although, I must need a valve adjustment or something because I am not
getting 27mpg yet!)
