Jeep: Mystery Problem

    Mystery Problem

86 Cherokee, 2.8LV6, all stock. Does the crank with no spark trick. It
decides when it will do it. Everything checked per Chiltons with nothing
obvious or out of spec. When it pulls the no start trick I monkey with the
wires leading into the distributor (not the cap). It'll start after a few
jiggles/wiggles. Wife wants to replace full wiring harness due to brittle
connectors and I want to replace all the electronics in the distributor. The
confusion lies in not what could be replaced but what should be replaced.
Without knowing what is defective, it's the "shotgun" method of fixing
things. Replace components till it runs right. I personally don't subscribe
to this method. I would appreciate any insight into the problem that other
    members may have. Thanks

    Re: Mystery Problem

I once had a mystery come and go no spark on a '67 Triumph TR4. Eventually
I found myself stuck in the desert at night with no go from the motor. I
started taking every part to the ignition system apart and cleaning contacts
and checking resistance(much simpler systems in those days, no semiconductor
chips to worry about). When I got to the low tension lead between the
distributor and the coil, I could not get my fingers into the area where one
of the connecters was, so I pulled on the wire. That wire felt more like a
rubber band as I pulled, and there was the problem. The copper had broken,
but the broken ends were held in close proximity by the insulation so if I
would check stuff under the hood I could inadvertently touch that wire and
either cause or fix the problem. It was a real pain 'till I figured it out,
but at least the fix was cheap. You probably do not have the same problem,
but this is an example of how simple yet hard to find these things can be.

    Re: Mystery Problem

There's no lack of "rubbery" wires under this hood. However none leading
into the distributor. No damage, charring or discoloration on the wires in
question. I'll just have to grit my teeth and start changing parts. Thanks
    for the response.

    Re: Mystery Problem

    I hate leaving a thread without a conclusion. I replaced the coil/ignition
control module, ignition module and the magnetic pickup. Since then, there's
been no problems starting the engine.
