Ferrari: Is my clutch slipping ?

    Is my clutch slipping ?

This year I purchased a 1986 328. I hadnt thought much about the shifting
until an experienced friend drove the car and mentioned that he thought the
    gears were behaving strangeley.

    For example....

Coasting along in 3rd gear (guessing...approx 25 mph) and punching the
throttle causes the RPMs to shoot up to 5-6,000, the car accelerates.
But then while accelerating the RPMs drop to about 4K and start climbing
again and the car accelerates even faster .... shift to 4th.

Its kind of like the engine is turning more RPMs than the tran can keep up
with.... but the tran eventually does.

Does this sound like a worn clutch issue ? Its only noticeable when
accelerating hard. Normal driving produces no odd symptoms.

So, Is it time for a new clutch ?
or could it be transmission issues ?
    or is this normal ?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but my experience with other cars is that
when punching the throttle, the car kinda bogs a little until the engine can
turn the tran faster - without a drop in RPMs.

    Thanks for any help.

I couldn't quite follow the rest of your description, but this bit does
    sound
like the clutch. You MUST get it checked at a garage before any further
use, or you risk overheating and cracking the flywheel (so I've read).

BTW, the clutch is not expensive...

    ....fitting it is :-(

Sounds very much like clutch slippage - as Paulo says, get it looked at,
drive it gently & don't drive it far till you have.

Another good test for the state of your clutch is to put the car in 4th at
rest and try & drive away from rest (without using huge amounts of revs. If
the clutch is healthy it should pretty much stall the car. If it isn't you
won't go anywhere & the engine will keep running - and you need a new
clutch. This test can of course finally finish your clutch off if its really
on its way out so do as you see fit (& not necessarily as I say!)

Coasting along in any gear you should be able just punch it & get a
corresponding kick in the arse with a linear increase in revs & speed - same
    as any car really.

If you are a half competent mechanic its DIY-able. Search the archives at
www.ferrarichat.com - there's a write up on how to do a 308 clutch in there
somewhere & its basically the same AFAIK. IIRC there is one special tool
    required.

Thanks for the sincere replies. I have no prior experience with Ferraris so
I thought I would just ask other owners.
I am taking it next week for a checkout.

Sorry the question was so far beneath you Bacchus. What types of questions
am I allowed to ask here ?

Pay no attention - he is our resident bore....

As Paulo said the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask. Welcome
& come back anytime & if you are not sure feel free to ask.

Also have a look at www.ferrarichat.com - there is a thriving technical
section over there and many people who work on their own cars - and some who
work on F cars for a living - so lots of knowledge.

Oh and the other advantage is old "Bacchus" doesn't like F-Chat - seemingly
its "beneath" him so he doesn't go there.
