    Miata- A girl's car?

I am a 50 year old male Miata owner. Last night, while at a social gathering, the topic of cars came up. I mentioned that I was an owner of a new Miata. This women who I had just met, burst out with "that's a girls car"! I was a bit taken aback by that comment having never thought about it one way or the other. The best comeback I could muster was "Well maybe with the automatic transmission". Her comment ate at me all night, hence this post.
What are the demographics of Miata ownership? Does anyone have anything to share on this topic?

All over the place. "Man's car" and "girl's car" are artifacts of
sexual insecurity. Why worry what insecure people think?

Yes, women love them--my car draws females like moths to a flame.
Teenaged girls hang out of the windows of their boygriends' Camaros to
yell "NICE CAR!" on the highway. Funny, I never saw that as a downside.
    My wife thinks it's amusing.

Never underestimate the power of the Miata's standard-equipment
    BabeMagnet(tm).

I live in Tampa and I'm in the habit of checking out every Miata I pass
on the highway. I'd estimate that 80-85% of the drivers are male. Of
those most of them look to be between 30 and 60; I don't see a lot of
teenaged or early-twenties guys driving them, nor a lot of white-haired
senior citizens. Hardly any ricers, either.

Way back when Miatas first came out, they had quite a buzz going for
them; for a little while there, local dealers were able to get a $3000
premium _over_ full retail price, so great was the demand. There was a
trend then where a new Miata was often less an automobile than a fashion
accessory for hip, moderately well-off, young women. Among other
things, driving a Miata was a way for them to announce "See? no back
seat; I'm single, I don't need room for a baby carrier!" The thing
about fashion crazes like that is that once a large enough number of
people acquire the item, whatever it is, it loses its coolness, being no
    longer _exclusive_.

Anyway it was reasonable back then, ten or twelve years ago, to consider
the Miata as "a girl's car," and also as a car whose owners didn't
usually drive it particularly hard. I saw the same thing a couple years
back when the Honda S2000, a real screamer, hit the market. Practically
every one I saw was being driven by a youngish woman, in the slow lane.
But today I see a lot more male S2000 owners, mostly hauling ass too.

At the same time all those fashionable young women were buying them
because they were so cute, a lot of older guys like me who had spent
their youths lusting after the European roadsters of the sixties were
also hot to get our hands on a Miata. How we grumbled when we heard
about the dealer premium! Miatas may have lost most of their girlie
buzz with time, but they still really hit the spot for us: a car with
the driving characteristics of a '68 Alfa Spider, the looks of a '64
Lotus Elan, and the build quality and reliability of a '95 Toyota
Corolla. And no fixed top! I think the best part of today's Miata
market is us middle-aged guys, nostalgic for those wonderful sixties
    roadsters.

Anyway, I think that one woman was kind of flirting with you; after you
get sorted out in your Miata, you should take her out for a spin. A
Miata is, in my opinion, the _ideal_ car in which to pull up to a
roadside motel in a sea-side resort town...

HA HA HA :-D Great picture! The subject of girl/boy man/woman car has been
discussed many times over the years. For the record I am a 57 year old female.
I"ve had my Miata since July of 1989. So, I am an old geezerette.

I see mostly males between 30 and 50 driving most of them around these parts.
Rarely a young female/male. I've seen a few older ladies and a few older men.
    That's about it.

I'm a 67 year old male Miata owner. I think that almost all of the
member/owners in our Miata club are male - just a few ladies. And very few
will ever see 39 again!! We, without many exceptions, all owned British,
German, and Italian sports cars in the 50s and 60s. Now we own sports cars
that run and run and run - Zoom ZOOM!!

You should have pulled out your weiner and said "This is for girls too,

That's a classic. That picture is going up on my office wall tomorrow.
I'm a 58 year old geezer (like Cissy's a geezerette) and I've been the only
owner of this car since it was new in '92. I too get the compliments from the
little ladies. (Are 12 year old girls "little ladies"?)

    Jim -
My daughter is 12 years old so be careful. LOL. I had a good laugh last
night when I went to drop her off at a slumber party. We took the Miata and
when we got to her friend's house several of the 12-13 year old "little
ladies" were checking out the car. My daughter thinks she is going to
inherit the Miata when she turns 16 but she has another think coming.
