Yes, but only since last month.
That's good!
AFAIK ther's financial tax advantages in
thw UK, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands
and Sweden.
With the MB four-bangers it is 580 Euro
incl. German VAT at 16 percent.
That's why the ones without additives are better.
Interesting info.
I am very suspicious, too, about the longevity
of the modern diesel engines - I simply do not
believe they will last as long as the simple
ones used until the Mercedes W124-series (those
were built 1985-1995).
Of course for most people 250.000 or 300.000
miles would be more than sufficient - but at first
those engines do really have to meet that mark.
Juergen - has a low-tech diesel in Mercedes W123
which still is built new for cars in India

There is one main reason for the diesels popularity in Europe -
differential taxation. In the US diesel fuel now routinely sells for more
than unleaded regular gasoline. How can anyone justify paying extra for a
diesel vehicle if the fuel is more expensive? True the diesel will get
better mileage, but in most cases this will be at the sacrafice of some
performance.

Nope. Diesel engines still emits more carcinogenic particulates than
gas ones. And you assume that the current taxation will remaing the
same, which will not from 2006 and on. You also assume that gas
engines won't increasingly improve either, direct injection, for
example.
For the only reason that in Europe a full tank of gas in a Focus may
set you back $50.

So does the new Fiat 1.3 Diesel without particulate filter...
Then again, EU4 for gas engines is less rigorous than CA's ULEV and
allows for more pollutants for Diesel engines.

Re: Mercedes-Benz hit with suit
That may have been true once in a number of countries and may still
influence some people's decisions (even though it is rarely worthwhile to
pay the extra for a diesel engine unless you do a ery high mileage) but is
no longer that significant.
How do you explain the steep rise of diesel sales in the UK where the fuel
costs the same as or more than standard 95-octane (c. 90 in the US)
petrol/gasoline?
The Merc S 320 CDI is the number-1-selling 'luxury executive' saloon in the
UK. To people for whom the price of fuel is probably a secondary
consideration.

Direct injection petrol engines are in common use and do not provide
the hoped-for advantages and indeed have many pollution problems, not
least of which is a high level of particulate emission, at least on
the scale of modern diesels. Diesel technology is advancing at a far
greater rate than the relitively mature petrol technology.

Do you seriously believe that I care about the price of a tank of gas
in my two cars which cost between them the best part of £100,000UKP ?
LOL.
By far the majority of BMW 7 and Mercedes S are now sold as diesel
here. It seems incomprehensible to Americans that these are the
engines of choice, even in the UK where the diesel fuel is more
expensive than petrol. Believe it!

Well yes. They do not claim to ne ultra low emission vehicles.
Remember that electricity produced from coal or oil to run a car, even
atomic energy, has a pollution cost.
