Toyota Prius: Mending scratches on the cheap?

Mending scratches on the cheap?
Well it's happened, I discovered from somewhere some nasty, fairly deep
bumper scratches on my 2005 Black Prius :-( not sure where that happened
though if I interrogated my wonderful wife I'm sure I'd get some clues :-p
Being that I'm not terribly familiar with body work I'd like to throw
open a thread, what would you guys do for decent scratch repair without
spending too much $? Sure I could go to a paint and body shop but
surely there's something better out there, it just needs to be decent
quality that isn't terribly obvious.

I've got some on my black 2005 too. It's clear to me someone parked next to
me turned to sharply backing away from their spot, grazing the driver's side
rear bumper. It's more a rub than a deep scratch but it did expose the
primer. I understand Toyota has a spray kit including some rubbing compound
possibly intended to deal with overspray. I'm going to ask my dealer about
that when I get my 20K service.

You could always order a bottle of touch-up paint yourself from your
favorite Toyota parts source. I think it's approaching US$10 now, with
the new applicator... You'll need your car's paint color code to order
the correct color.
It's a little out of date (I've been procrastinating updating it...),
but:

It'll not be as pretty as a newly painted bumper cover from your local
body shop, but at least it'll protect the base layer a bit and not be
quite as noticable...
