    Market for Used Tires

Has anyone on this group tried to sell used tires that had only a few
hundred miles on them? Is there much of a market for used tires?

Dunno why not, I've purchased sets of used tires in the past. Single
tires probably won't bring much since they'd likely be purchased for a
spare. But sets of 4 with only a few thousand miles ought to sell at
perhaps half of retail, up into the $200 range (not considering mount &
balance), depending on the quality of the tire model. Your local paper
or swapsheet is probably the best bet, since shipping charges and
hassles would effectively raise the cost to the buyer.

    Wayne,

Well, two of the tires have a few hundred miles on them, and the other two
have about fifteen thousand miles on them. These are Good Year tires ( the
two with a few hundred miles are Eagle GT 2's, and the other two are
Bigfoot HP's). I paid about seventy dollars each for each of the four the
    tires.

Based on your response, maybe I can get $30.00 or so for the two GT 2's.
    Does that sound reasonable?

    Thanks for responding,
    Charles

If you know of no internal damage, why not--
it certainly beats paying a tire dealer the 2-5
buck disposal fee. (He would probably resale
    them outside the store anyway.)

When you sell them have the buyer sign a
simple statement that the tires are sold "as-is"
and that you "are not in the regular business
of selling or servicing tires." (So if one of these
comes unglued at 135 mph, you don't become
dance partner with his insurance company.) Or
take cash at a swap meet, wear a fake moustache
    and remain nameless.

    No I don't. However, about 20 years ago I bought my 911
from a lawyer who had me sign such an agreement when
he gave me the bill of sale. I've used the same hunk of
words whenever I've sold a truck, car or bike. While I'd
not knowingly sell a speed rated tire that had hidden
damage one never knows what's inside there. I've got a
couple of clients who are lawyers. They make their living
finding ways to tap someone's liability insurance. (About
a year ago one of them casually asked me whether I
carried Errors and Omissions insurance--next day, I found
someone else to service his computer systems.)

Probably reasonable, but may not be easy finding someone who wants just
two tires, most people want a matched set... although, GT2's are quite
common, so perhaps someone who had a sidewall puncture, or bad alignment
    that caused premature wear.

    Mike,

I had not thought about this. Do you know of anyone who has run into problems, selling
tires without this kind of a signed statement?

    Thanks,
    Charles

Your tire dealer will likely take them on trade toward a new set.

    Joe,

I've mentioned this to a number of dealers, and none would accept used
    tires as trade-ins.
