Corvette: Looking at a 1992 vette

Looking at a 1992 vette
It's sitting in the used car lot of the local VW dealer belive it or not. Looks like it's in decent shape - has 28.5K on it. Tires look good but can't determine if they are original equipment or not. Body looks great and interior looks very good. Looks like it's been garaged in winters. It's a manual shift but I couldn't tell if it was 5 or 6 speed. Can anyone point to a good site to review specs on 1992. Also anything noteworthy that I should be looking for in terms of potential problems? They have it for $15.9K marked down from $17.9 on the sticker. Sounds reasonable but I haven't look at KBB yet.

Re: Looking at a 1992 vette
IMHO its priced too high...you can get a nice 96 or even a 97+ C5 for pretty close to that price if you aren't in a big hurry and take a look around. If you like the car I wouldnt pay more than 12k for it...dealers think ultra low miles means its made of gold. Prices on Vettes and most other cars are cheap at this time since the economy is so bad and especially Vettes since most aren't driven in winter...people might want to get rid of them and no have to store them.
Also I am not big on buying from dealers anymore since they are a ripoff and have every car overpriced, if you buy from a individual. They will always be cheaper and can probably even tell you more about the car you are looking at since they currently own it and probably have records on the car. Best place to look for used cars is autotrader.com

I wouldn't pay more than 12 K for the car. I would start by saying that is the going price for a 96 with same miles. Around here 92s are selling for less money than 12K.

I too think 15K is high.... I do own a 95 6 speed Corvette that now has 65 K on her clock... and I would be extremely lucky to get 15K for it if I sold it...and it is absolutely in
perfect shape ( well there are the usual chips in the hood) and has been a completely trouble free car...
I am not impressed with the low milage either...JUst not much of a "value" to me... Cosmetics on the other hand I
do value... I just find it easier to turn a wrench then to
hold a paint gun etc...

Re: Looking at a 1992 vette
My '92 was a very good car but spend a little more and get a C5. Maybe wait until after the first of the year (C6 introduced) and go for a C5, you won't regret it. The 92 you're looking at is very high priced if you want a driver.

I think most people in the group always tell you the car is too
expensive and you can get it for less. I had a 93 convertible and
decided to sell it. Sold it last year for $19,500. It had 22K on it.
It is a 6 spd always garaged. When I sold it, this group thought a
car like that one should have been around 15K.
I never liked the ride in the convertible. Or the non sport seats,
too confining. I sold it with intentions of getting a c5. This
newsgrouop was telling me I could find a good c5, a 98 model for under
$20K or low 20's. They were right. I found a 9 c5, worn seats, borla
exhaust with 49K on it for 25grand.
I settled on a 96 lt4 with 17K miles for twenty grand. Compared to
the convertible the car is fairly solid. Nothing like a c5. Compared
to the regulare seats in my old c4 the new sport seats are excellent.
The c5 is still much easier to get in and out, however I like my seats
more then the c5.
Never enjoyed riding the convertible with the top up, I really enjoy
the glass top lt4.
A 92 for $16K is about right. It should have new tires (worth about
$900). Yes, if you have the extra 8 grand, go for the c5 it is
better. Drive the car - see if you can live with getting in and out -
listen to the motor, check the clutch and see if you can get receipts.
Oh yeah, you will pay less in the winter......
Good luck
Wouldn't it be great if the guy that tells you you could get a c5 in
mint condition with low mileage for 20 grand also told you where one
was for sale?
