    Liberty -- Servicing Transmission

Hello... At my last scheduled service -- (58,000 km), the service man
said that the automatic transmission had not been included in the major
one I had the time before, and was due for an oil change. I said go
ahead... Following the service, I noticed on the drive home, when I
decelerated down to about 10 mph, the transmission would pop into the
lower gear. ...But it would do so in the same dramatic manner as if I
was driving a standard and had popped the clutch into a lower gear with
the engine running too fast. The tires would almost lock-up and skid.
I phoned the service man as soon as I got home (12 mile drive). He
called the mechanic over who had done the service, and he said because
the oil was removed and the engine started, it had to self-learn (or
something) ..But he said if I brought it back in the next day, they
could re-set the computer ?? IE: fix it in about 10 minutes. ...The
next day I drove it back. There is a steep hill on the highway, and when
the transmission dropped down into the passing gear while climbing it, I
swear I got the impression that if I looked in my rear view mirror, I
would see my transmission laying on the highway behind me. The way it
grabbed was almost as if I was already rolling backwards in a standard,
then popped the clutch in first with the engne racing.. ...It did this
once more during my climb -- unavoidable, once it shifted into the next
gear, in spite of my taking it easy.

Surely this can't be good for the whole unit. ...I complained when I
brought it into the main service dept. ...The boss said... We have to do
this all the time with Dodge Caravans when we change trans. oil, and it
looks like we'll have to start doing it with Liberties from now on.

What did they fail to do? ...And, could my transmission have been
damaged by their failure to do it? Thanks... Jon

I don't know much about the Liberty, but did you check your
transmission fluid level? I have heard about a "retraining" procedure
on Chrysler transmissions but I don't know how it works. Maybe a
    Google search would help?

Hi Drifter... I didn't check the trans. level after they had serviced
it. --One usually assumes they add enough new oil when they drain the
old stuff out. I got the impression from the mechanic, though, that it
would correct itself. ...However, they told me to come in because I had
told them that I intended to be heading out on an extended drive in the
next few weeks. Perhaps when they serviced it, they just filled it to
the dip-stick mark, and forgot to run the engine to fill the rest of the
    system. ??
...Of course...They did seem to be immediately aware of what the
problem was, as soon as I explained the symptoms. ...Jon

Well good luck. When you do find the answer please be sure to do a
follow up post so the rest of us know too. (Someday when the Cherokee
dies I may wind up in a Liberty...or whatever the newest jeep is
    <grin>).
