Jeep: Jeep is running...again :)

Jeep is running...again :)
Hello group,
I wrote recently claiming how my repair shop told me that my jeep engine was
toast. The chronic overheating at the oddest times was too much they
thought. I left it at the repair shop parking lot for a few weeks. I
needed to get a lower radiator hose and put it on to drive it away to my
house (appx 5 miles). It was overheating at about that amount of driving.
Anyways, I put the hose on and drove it home. I was going to take it to the
actual Jeep dealer for a second opinion. But I decided to check the
thermostat that I replaced a few years ago. I took it out and dropped it
into some scalding hot water that I boiled. It did nothing. I repeated the
test after cooling it in ice water and then the boiling. It did nothing. I
had another thermostat around (non jeep) and tried the experiment on it as
well. It opened as it should each time. Hmmmm.....
I then liquid gasketed the housing back onto the engine minus the
thermostat. It was a 195 degree one. I then filled it up taking great care
to make sure I got as much air out of the system as possible. I then let it
cure for a day and then drove it. And as you probably summized, it did not
overheat in the slightest. The overflow bottle was consistant in its
operation (no bloating). The upper radiator hose felt solid like it had
fluid in it. It never did when it was overheating all the time. Ive tried
to get it to hot operating conditions to see if its fine. I tried 4
wheeling with the A/C on with excessive rpm's at times. Then shut it down.
No overheating. Nothing.
Im hoping Im right on it was a faulty thermostat. But Im now preparing for
the worst.
I appreciate all and every bit of help from this newsgroup. Its better than
a Haynes manual any day! Extra thans to Romain.

Don't run it too long w/o a thermostat. If it didn't open in hot water, it's
bad. I would put a new one in there.

Why is running without a thermostat bad?

I didnt put another thermostat in. I left it out. The only thing Im
regretting is in the winter, the heat will be less efficient. I am just so
sick and tired of the overheating problem that was plaguing me.
Im not sure how logical this is, but steve mentioned the carbon in the
system. Wouldnt the overflow bottle in my year provide a way for that to
dissipate?
thanks all,

Carbon, that black soot that develops in your engine and exhaust
system. Enough can soot up (foul) your sparkplugs resulting in
terrible gas mileage, hard starting, loss of power, etc.
Also it can clog up your catalytic converter resulting in hard starts,

The thermostat has a reason for being there.

That depends on just how much of a computer his jeep has. If I
am correct this is a 1988 jeep. What year did the computer become
sophisticated enough to monitor block temperature? I thought that
exhaust data was the primary source for setting fuel ratio.
OTOH a little carbon can improve compression ratio. :-)

Re: Jeep is running...again :)
Whatever year the computer is, one of the ways it controls fuel/air mixture
is the coolant temperature. When the engine is cold, it richens the mixture.
With no thermostat, it will stay in this rich mode, causing bad mileage and
carbon build up.

Re: Jeep is running...again :)
Put the thermostat in. It needs to run at the proper temperature. You
really do not want to risk the perils that the other folks have posted here.
It is a cheap part and easily installed.
