Jeep: Jeep Liberty Transmission

    Jeep Liberty Transmission

Hello... Is it normal for the automatic transmission in the Liberty to
drop into the passing gear with a noticeable lurch? ...I'm used to
vehicles that when they change gears, it's a smooth process -- where one
gear flows into the next. ...This condition is most noticeable when one
hits an incline, and the transmission drops into the lower gear.
...It's almost like having an extra slack chain on a motorcycle.
...This problem seemed to start when I took the vehicle in for a
service, and the man said you're due for a transmission service.
....When I drove off with the vehicle, and whenever the trans. dropped
into the lower gear, it would go in with such a noticeable "thump", that
the rear wheels felt almost like they locked up for a split second.
...I immediately took the vehicle back in, and was told they forgot to
re-set some "learning" process on the computer. I mentioned this
problem a few times to the service manager, but he says everything seems
to be ok. ...There was some upgrade notice to do with the trans., but
it made no difference. ...Any help would be appreciated. ...Jon

This is not normal. Not knowing the year of your vehicle, I can't give you
specifics, but there IS a TSB (Technical Service Bulliten) for the problem
you are describing, covering the 2003 model year. It involves reflashing
the tranny's ROM, and then wiping the active memory to kick off a new
    learning cycle.

Thanks for the response. ...It is a 2003 Liberty (limited Edition), I
have. ...They apparently did what you describe, at my last service (a
week ago), but I have noticed no difference. ....Jon

Jon, I read your review of your Liberty on the web site you provided, from
an earlier post. You said you have part time 4X4 and you were using it on
dry payment. You said it sounded like it was going to come apart. You also
said that it would not turn (the wheels) on corners, just skid around. Do
you know you can not use part time 4X4 on dry payment? Maybe you have
damaged the driveline. This is very damaging to the vehicle.

    Just a thought.

    Re: Jeep Liberty Transmission

Johnny - this problem and the one you asked about back on 2/26/2005 (where
you left the dealer and it downshifted and chirped) seem similar. It might
be the same thing. What has happened between now and then? If this is the
same thing, you may be adding up to possibly building a case under the lemon
    laws.

I am not sure how running on dry pavement in part time 4WD might be
affecting this (I have a manual TJ), but NEVER run it in part time on dry or
only wet pavement. It is all locked together with nothing slipping (as
evidenced by the skidding and groaning - it was pleading with you), so doing
this puts stress on the whole drivetrain as it tries to outlive the stresses
that are introduced which only wheel slippage on the ground can alleviate.
There might be a 'weak link' in the transmission that got stressed by this
    behavior.

Also - if you have not done so yet, you might find more and better responses
in you post another iteration of this in the much more populated
    rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys NG.

Andy - where did you see this link? I do not see it in that previous
    post...

I used the part time 4X4 once. ...And I'm sure it ain't gonna hurt it
when you back up on drive pavement doing 1/2 mile an hour and then turn.
...If this can damage the vehcle, there'd be a lot more warnings -- and
even imprinted right on the dash. ...No, the problem started when the
service dept. forgot to reset the computer (or whatever), after
servicing the transmission. ...The resulting dramatic lockup, as a
result, took place when the vehicle was going 50 mph. ...The symptons
I experience now are identicle, but not so dramatic. ...Jon

Here it is Tomes. In a part time 4X4 system it won't take long to have
problems on dry pavement. Jon said he didn't drive far in Part Time.

If you want further info on the Libertys, check out
www.carsurvey.org ...I'm listed on there with the 2003 "limited
Edition" Liberty Titled: (Lots of bells and whistles, but overall a
lemon.) ...I bought a white jeep, but I should have opted for a yellow
    one. ...Jon

    SNIP

The vehicle works very awkwardly in "part time 4 wheel drive"...If one goes
to back up and turn, the drive train tightens up (like the brakes are being
applied)..I heard a "clunk" from the rear, one time. Seems like something is
going to break. Also, when turning, the wheels skid on the ground like the
    differential is locked.

    goes
    being
    is

.... and the reason for this is that all of the wheels are traveling locked
together, so when the outside wheel when turned needs to travel further, it
needs to skip and feels awkward in full turn - that is normal. If you did
it just for a short bit you are likely OK for that, nap. While there are no
warning labels, it does detail this in the owners manual I believe.

Your problem needs to be fixed by the dealer under the 7/70,000 warranty.

This trans. problem is lumped right in with my numerous complaints over
the rough idle. ...Everytime I mention either of these 2 problems, the
service manager just says: "Well... Nothing shows up on the computer,
and we couldn't find anything wrong." ...And everytime I go in for
service I mention these 2 things, and everytime they do nothing except
try to ad a bunch more service work on to the basic oil change, just to
get some more money out of me. ...You need the brake fluid changed, and
the trans., and the rear end serviced... And then you're about due for a
radiator flush etc. etc. etc. ...All I want is a decent running
vehicle. ...It's like-- if you can do that, I'm more than willing to
open up the wallet for the other things. ...The Jeep dealer here has
been a pain in the butt since day one. ...And the funny thing is-- I'm
not even the complaining type. This Liberty is the worst vehicle I
    have ever owned. ...Jon
