    Instrument Panel Lights Out

    For my 1997 BMW 528i (E39):
Can someone please help? The lights on the instrument panel (speedometer,
tachometer, fuel, temp) have gone out . Turn signals OK...high beam
indicator OK...all digital readout stuff OK?

BMW dealers are 100 miles away and cannot give me an appointment until
    Friday September 5th.

All the fuses appear to OK...fuses 17, 19, 23 are not there but socket
    wiring exists...

My jaw gets sore holding the flashlight in my teeth.

Is there somewhere on the 'Net where I can get a diagram of what's behind
the dash? Get a diagram of what each fuse in the glove box services?

    Many thanks.

This happened in my old bimmer - it was a corroded wire behind the light
dimmer control knob. If you can determine the correct wire from the fuse
panel/box, test the end where it connects to the dimmer control. If there
is power with the headlights turned on, unplug the connector from the back
of the instrument panel and see if it also has power in the plug that
    connects to the panel.

    Hope that helps ya

Oh, forgot the most obvious thing. Have you checked the dimmer switch? On
BMW the sucker shuts off the lights completely when it is all the way down.
You might want to try spinning it up and down to clean up the contacts.

On the back of the dimmer switch is a connector with wires for the dash AND
for the instrument panel. The wire that connects for the instrument panel
may be corroded, or not seated well inside the connector. Unplug the
connector and check the specific wire with a voltmeter (with headlights on),
and if it has power, check the connector that goes to the back of the
    instrument panel for power.

If it's the same as the one Mercedes is (and nearly everythng else
seems to be) then you can repair the dimmer switch most times:
