Mazda Miata: Inspecting Power Window

Inspecting Power Window
On a '91 Miata, is it difficult to take the door interior cover off to just
inspect the mechanism? I'm not talking about dismantling the power window
itself, but checking to see if there is a problem that exists. Also, can you
work the power window with the cover off, while its exposed?

If it's like my '90, you just pop off the speaker cover (pull up
gently to release the clips), remove the door handle and armrest,
the pull out gently on the interior cover to release the clips
and slide up towards the window.
Your most common problem with the window will be dirt and gunk
built up in the window guides/channels. That usually makes the
window run slowly. Unfortunately the best way to clean the
guides is to remove them and that gets into taking the whole damn
door apart. The Enthusiast's Shop Manual has all the
instructions, complete with photos.
But it's a good idea to keep the tracks cleaned and lubricated or
you'll end up replacing the regulator and/or cable.
I just replaced the passenger-side regulator 'cause the cable
snapped and pieces disappeared. Took about 45 minutes.

Was any of the plastic guide wheels of the tracks destroyed, as is
suggested can happen somewhere on miata.net?
My windows really have problems, but I hesitate to take the door
apart any further than to the transparent plastic. OTOH, spraying
in lithium grease from the top is not really effective.

The wheels had flat spots and cracks. From what I could tell
after the fact, it appears that one of the wheels hung up, which
snapped the cable and sent the plastic piece that used to be on
the cable into parts unknown.
And a really good place to lube if you can get there without
taking everything apart, is right at the top of the assembly
where the cable guide/stop block come together. It's at the very
top of the window guide toward the rear of the door.
If that part hadn't vanished, I might have tried replacing just
the cable. However, I was fortunate enough to get a whole
assembly thru a friend, who had *just* bought it from e-bay!
He's going to convert the non-power windows into power windows on
his Laguna so his was not an emergency need and he was kind
enough to pass on the part for the same price he paid for it.
$52.90 - including handling. A heck of a lot better than the
nearly $205 the dealer wanted!

That was what I was afraid of.
Thanks, I'll try that. I do not have time to really fix things
right now.
