    Re:Honda Accord Died

Retrieved the car on my car dolly today and checked it out in my garage.

Took the drivers side wheel off and when I attempted to take the bolt off

that holds the main bottom pulley in place found it to be so "loose" I could

remove it with my fingers! Took off the pulley and found the key had been

sheared, keyway damaged and bored hole in pulley damage. Could this have

been an assembly issue??? Maybe an incorrect torque setting?? Looks as the

bolt came loose over a period of x amount of time causing the pulley to

strip the key and inside bore. Hmmmmmmmmm.........Honda will here about this

Monday and perhaps should pay for my new pulley , key, and 2 belts!!!!

If the key way in the crankshaft is damaged, then it's likely that the
crankshaft will need to be replaced depending of course on the extent of the
damage. This work could be done without removing the engine from the car though
the transmission would need to be removed and the engine would likely need to be
suspended. However, some shops might argue that it would be easier to remove
the entire engine in order to replace the crank. ...and yes, if the bolt was
not torqued correctly, then this could have been the cause for it coming loose.
Did you have work on the timing belt performed recently?

Honda Canada won't warranty the harmonic balancer/main pulley coming
loose....I've heard bad things about theircustomer service..........hmmm
..maybe a big bold sign on my car "LEMON" will help.... parked in front of
    the dealership!

    Lori,

Maybe I'm not as thorough as I should be, but I don't recall what you
said about the mileage of this '99 Accord. Since that bolt was tightened
to something like 180 ft.Lb when it left the factory, and since it's a
'99, could it be that the previous owner has had the TIMING BELT
    replaced?

The best way to get good advice around this group is to state ALL the
details about mileage, service history, ownership, etc.

Hope things work out for you...
