Mazda Miata: Homemade shift boot

    Homemade shift boot

I read of a guy who went down to the local fabric store, bought some leather
and traced his vinyl shift boot to make a pattern. Sounds straight forward
enough. Anyone else do this? How'd it turn out for you?

This is for a 3. Momo makes a leather shift boot, but I don't care for the
logo. It'd be cool to do it from scratch.

Hey- that was no guy- that was me! Yes, I made a shift boot, and it looks
great (perfect) and cost maybe $5.00.
Attaching it to the shift lever at the top is a bit tricky- I used a plastic
wire tie- like you'd use to group and hold wiring together, but you could
use leather (though I think it would be likely to break and need replacing)
or some sort of twine, but I went with the tie because it just seemed right
and it looks perfect (invisible and strong). The boot is attached by
hooking it onto hooks on the plate- just use the old one for a pattern and
poke the holes in the same place and voila! A perfectly good and
professional-looking gear shift boot. I should go into business making
these things- it's a piece of cake if you're
handy. My Miata is a '93 (red) and has a black leather gear shift boot.
Be glad to help you with any questions you may have!

Hey- I should have asked you before I replaced mine!
I had to figure it out for myself, and-from what I hear-
that's not very easy for us blondes!

I bought mine from them for $35 but it was Italian glove leather and supurb!
The hardest part of the installation was getting the "ring" out of the old
boot. I glued it into the new boot with spray upholstery glue. Works
    super!!
