    High Mileage 2001 M3 Risks??

Anyone have a feel for the risks of a well maintained 2001 M3 (U.S. car -
April 2001 Build Date) with lots of miles (56,500) ....... no accidents or
damage and 50/50 Highway vs City miles. Body is without dings and looks
very good to excellent but normal wear on the interior leather seats. All
scheduled maintenance was performed on schedule and is well documented. Not
tracked, but occasionally driven very aggressively to show-boat etc. CARFAX
checks it out clean. 2nd owner bought it as a 1 year old.

Asking price is very reasonable (mid-30's) but I've not seen one with that
many miles on it. What scheduled maintenance would be coming due at 60,000
miles and expected cost? Brake linings and tires are nearly new. All
options except for 19' wheels, NAV, SMG, Parking Distance Control and Cold
    Weather .... Titanium Silver w/ Blk Leather .... 6-Spd.

    Thanks .... DW

I think it would probably be about due for an Inspection II. As for other
issues, run it to your dealer and ask them if they do any free 28-pt
inspections. If the brakes and tires are new, that takes quite a bit of
worry out of the situation. I would definately have the car put up in the
air and have the rear end checked out (cars like this are driven hard), as
    well as the front suspension.

Good grief. It should be in *perfect* fettle at that mileage, and for a

lol, I was expecting you to say something well over 100k. Even if it did
have a 100k on as long as there is a history of good maintenance don't
    worry!

Have a look at the mileage of some cars on ebay. Maintenance is key. Get a
good one and don't worry about the little numbers on the clock :-)

You are looking at a car that is turning about 28,000 miles per year. I
would think twice, or get a significant price reduction for the very high
    mileage.

Go to www.kbb.com and plug in everything you know for a Private Party sale,
and see what they suggest for a street value. You can run the value for
Retail and Wholesale too. I would even run the value for something closer to
a normal mileage and see what the mileage alone does to the value.

Obviously the price is dependant on mileage. But a car which clocks up a
high mileage initially has usually had lots of highway use, so little
wear. Check for stone chipping, though.

KBB shows it as $30K Whlse and $33K Retail .... at 56K miles with no
warranty remaining other than the pressure lubed parts of the engine to 100K
miles. At a lower 30K miles add $5K to both values. This car is usually
going for around $38K to $39K with 25K to 30K miles, but would still have
bumper to bumper warranty for another two years up to 50K miles.

It's probably a good deal at $33K, but remember that a major repair like the
rear end could easily cost $4K to $5K on the M3s .... this ain't no ordinary
    330 3-series.

Amen to that ....... besides, I seriously doubt there a lot of slow lane
tree huggin' gas conserving Volvo drivers that get behind the wheels of
those super fast U.S. Gas-Guzzler Taxed 3 and 5 Series M machines from BMW
    ;-)

I think you answered your own question. IF you're THAT concerned about
something breaking, I would recommend you pass and get something with
less miles and more warranty. On the other hand, I would take a car
with 56K miles that was mostly "highway" miles versus one with 20K
miles that was most "city". In the latter case, all city driving with
lots of stop and go and constant starts ups will put more strain and
stress on an engine vesus one that just "cruises" at a set speed.
Nonetheless, if you still like the car, its definitely worth having a
good independent shop inspect it before buying. To find a good
independent, almost any member of the IAIBMWSP is qualified, see here:
