    Help: Seatbelt retractor spring problem

I posted recently to this newsgroup about a seatbelt retract
problem I've had with my 1993 Corolla.

I removed the retract mechanism to wind the retractor spring,
but there seems to be something wrong with the spring--it won't
hold tension. I wind it up and it works for a bit (though I
don't think I wound it as tightly as I should have), then gives
a buzz and spins down to where it has no tension.

Should I just replace the entire retractor unit?

    Thanks,
    -Al

That will fix the problem...for a while. I had the same problem in my 99
Camry. Under warranty, Toyota twice replaced my front, driver's side seat
belt. However, the problem has since returned. SOMEtimes, unless I manually
help feed the belt back into the retractor, it will dangle and catch in the
door frame. PITA. The spring should have been a stronger type.

I had the same problem with my '98 Corolla. The seatbelt was replaced, but
the problem returned. Then a peice of teflon tape was put on the seatbelt
loop to reduce retraction friction. It helped, but not to my satisfaction in
    the long run.
