HELP! Leaking clutch fluid
My 88 Tercel seems to have a leak coming from the top part of the
clutch pedal and is dripping fluid all over the carpet. I believe the
pedal somehow connects to the fluid tank in the engine bay but I'm not
really sure how. Has anyone especially the regular techs here have an
idea on where the problem might be? I'll be going to borrow a maual
from the library later today but ideas are welcome.

You need a new clutch master cylinder. The seals are going. My 88 truck
did this about 5 years ago. I put in a non-Toyota part that lasted only 4
years before it went again. The second tie, I went with the genuine Toyota
replacement part. I'm told (by non-Toyota employees) that this part is NOT
one to get from a parts house if you want it to last. Get a new one from
Toyota.
If you can bleed brake systems, you can install this yourself. You'll have
to bleed the clutch hydraulic system at the slave cylinder when you are
done.

Your clutch master cylinder is leaking because the rubber seal has gone.
I'll bet when you sit at lights with your foot on the pedal, the clutch
slowly re-engages.
The fix is fairly easy. A Haynes manual will show you how to take the
cylinder off. You will find that at the bottom of the MC bore there will be
black corrosion, which eventually tears up the seal. You can effect a
temporary fix just by getting a seal kit from Toyota and doing a straight
swap.
A permanent fix will mean replacement of the MC bore. DON'T buy one from
the wreckers. Find a rebuilt MC.

and I'm a real cheap bastard I just replaced the seal. But I did it
with out removing the cylinder from the car by going from the inside. It
worked like a champ. Suction out what fluid is left in the reservoir
with a disposable syringe (or your wife best basting syringe). From
under the dash disconnect the clevis rod from the pedal. Remove the
outer boot, which will leak even more fluid, so do it by capturing most
with a plastic bag. With a small screwdriver remove the little wavy
spring retaining ring thingy that keeps all the guts from falling out.
Take another bag and rubber band it to the part of the cylinder that the
removed boot used to slip over. Now with an air blowgun with a rubber
tip (or a lot of rags) shoot a burst of air down into the cylinder thru
the reservoir. This will pop the old seal and piston out of the cylinder
and into the bag. Pop the new one in, reinstall the retaining clip,
outer boot, clevis pin, add fluid, bleed out the air at the master
cylinder and slave (optional) and you should be all set. Now all you
need to do is find a cheap set of rubber floor mats to cover the soaked
carpet and to hide the basting syringe.

might have been my driving habits. Sitting at lights in gear is a good
way to go thru release bearings prematurely.

out last night, but only after removing the lower par of the dash to
get to the bolts holding the MC. I ordered a repair kit from the
dealer ($49 CDN) and picking it up this afternoon. Hopefully I should
be able to put back in tonight.
