Has Everyone Gone Nuts? - swap meet tale
I went to a swap meet yesterday and ran across some parts I was looking for.
I asked how much, the guys says $10, and I know that they are usually around
$20-$30.
Well, out of habit, I asked if he'd take less. I was going to buy at $10,
but after all, it is a swap meet.
Instead of dickering or saying no, he grabs them out of my hand, takes them
back to his truck, and yells at me to just get away from his space. He says
he won't sell anything to me.
I asked him what the deal was, didn't he have people trying for lower prices
all day? He just told me to get lost. Now they were $20 and in a couple of
minutes they would be $30. But he wouldn't sell them to me anyway (not that
I'd pay more than the original $10.)
Anyone else run into this?

Everybody has a bad day now & then, I guess you caught him having one.
He may have regretted the price as soon as it was out of his mouth. Next
time you'll know to pay the bargain price when you see it, without
hassling the guy for even more.

Not exactly, but there have been a few times where I had
offered something at a very low price and told the
interested buyer that the price was going to start going up
if he kept pushing.
When they tried again I raised the price. I was offering
the items at a price that I knew would sell without any
haggling so didn't have to deal with skinflints.
I've never gotten belligerent about it, just having fun with
cheapskates.

Tom,
I think theres a difference between a Car Parts Swap Meet....and a
Garage Sale.

You make an interesting point, but one different than this case. The guy
simply said $10. He didn't say "Hey, this is a super deal just for you. If
you try to go lower, I'll triple the price."
I didn't hassle him. I didn't say "hey, these are junk" or "I saw some just
like these at two other tables and they only wanted $5". I only asked
"Would you take less?"
A proper response would have been yes or no. An uncalled for response was
to blow up.
As to Dave and his garage sale comments, of course it isn't. In a garage
sale, everyone buys everything for $.50. But in the last 30 years of swap
meets, everyone has always haggled on prices except company vendors and
often they will give a deal for being at the show. Almost every private
vendor will tell you as you move away "well make me an offer".
It is expected here to haggle with a car dealer, but I get grief for asking
for a lower price at a swap meet?
Maybe everyone has gone nuts.

Re: Has Everyone Gone Nuts? - maybe they have
What I like is when they haggle over a service and not a tangible item...
Before the service is done...
I hate to haggle. I'd probably put the part back in my truck too. He was
probably miffed about staying in the hot sun all day long.

I agree. When you are selling something at a "right price" and someone makes
a ridicules offer it tends to piss one off.

Point was that he didn't make an offer. He asked if he would go lower. I
wouldn't have said it the way he did, but it was a fair question and
deserved a fair answer. I would have asked if he was firm on that price,
it's a form of testing the water to see if the person can be haggled with.
Most people don't realize the number of places that you can haggle prices.
After we lost our house in the flood from Allison, we had to purchase just
about everything new. We went to Sears and was able the haggle prices on
washer/dryer, icemaker, big screen tv, freezer, etc... They beat the offer
we had from another company.

Tom,
I think its worth asking for a lower price, but, be willing to get the
other guy offended if you do .. At these Swap Meets, the guy has to
rent a space , haul all his c___ to the space, sit there all day long,
and load up what stuff he doesnt sell to take back home. Theres an old
saying :" Everyone is entitled to make a profit" . I dont mind people
making a profit off of me, so long as its not outrageous.

Re: Has Everyone Gone Nuts? - maybe they have
Dave, that is only fair. I've been on both sides of the table.
However, after hauling 5 or 6,000 lbs of stuff, trying to maneuver a 28 ft
long trailer (24 box, 4 tongue) into a 10x30 space from a 15 ft aisle, sit
there all day long in the sun, heat, dust, and listen to every
self-appointed expert that walks along, I still don't blow up like this guy.
There is no reason to be offended. That is the point of being there, to
sell, and probably have someone try and haggle a lower price.
If I said "hey, this is junk!", then sure he should be offended. If I ask,
"will you take less?", it is a proper and polite question and it deserves
simply Yes or No.
I got irritated quite a bit over some of these "experts" telling me what
junk I had or how it was worthless, but I still didn't blow up. I told them
that was fine, pay my price or buy elsewhere. I also put up a sign about if
you can't make good comments, don't make any.
But I never grab something out of someone's hand and told them to get lost.
He blew a sale to me. Two other guys next to me also turned and walked
away. Did he blow two more sales?
I told about 5 people that I saw after that. Did he lose 5 more sales?
I have an old adage: If you can't deal with the public, don't get a job
dealing with the public.
