    Hard Steering Problem

Trying to fix a '80 Chevette w/o power steering. It has rack and pinion
steering and steers ungodly hard, it takes two hands to on the wheel to
drive it, even with the front wheels off the ground. The front end is seems
to be lubed well, my thoughts are the problem is in the rack and pinion. I
have felt through the boots on the tie rods connecting to the rack and they
feel greasy inside. I backed off the steering adjustment on the rack and
pinion about a full turn but that didn't seem to make a difference. My
question is if I just screwed that adjustment cap/plug out too far would it
be almost impossible to screw it back in because of the spring inside. I
don't know how strong that spring is. I should add that I disconnected the
steering column to isolate the problem.

WHY in God's Holy and gracious name would you attempt to fix a 1980
CHEVETTE????? If you want/like a small car you can get a 90 something
Cavilier or Grand Am for peanuts

Other than that...I would bet a rebuilt rack from Advance Auto ($131.79 with
$10 core charge) or Autozone would be a much better bet than messing around
with adjustments. That is if you are 100% sure it is bad or plan on keeping
the little bugger for a while longer

    Re: Hard Steering Problem

    DUH!!!

    Maybe it's because it sit's under a "1952 MG-TD Classic Roadster Replicar
Chassis"! What I'll do is just shitcan this ride because it's just too nice
a ride and too much fun to drive and troll the lots tomorrow for some real
piece of shit sled that burns oil like a bitch with no brakes and offer the
salesman a fuckin bag of peanuts!

Or, I could spend $130 on a rebuilt rack and pinion and then screw the nut
out of the old fucker just to see if I can screw it back on!

Let me step down a few levels of consciousness for a minute and explain
something... my question was "if I just screwed that adjustment cap/plug out
too far would it be almost impossible to screw it back in because of the
spring inside", not why, not to purchase another vehicle or to spend money
needlessly on a rack and pinion. Thanks for answering the question.

    So much for alt.autos.gm.

DUDE....settle a notch.....you never mentioned anything about the replicar
    chassis.....
Had you been a wee more descriptive as to WHY you were trying to fix a
Shitvette..I would have come off a bit different.
So now that we are to this point of understanding, I would go with your
second choice,. and have the new rack on standby while you went crazy with
    the spring.

    Good luck

Spend $130 for the sole purpose of experimentation? Brilliant...absolutely
Brilliant. I think I would sooner drop $130 in ENRON Common before wasting
$130, it's evident the question posited was and is beyond your scope of
    understanding.

    Re: Hard Steering Problem

Never mentioned wasting $130. That's what the recipt is for if your attempt
to fix the old one works for you. Bring the new one back. If your repair
attempt does not work, you can be back on the road in much less time I
guess the scope of common sense is beyond your intellegence level.

It is clear that you are far too intelligent for me to even comprehend..but
it puzzles me that if you were that smart, why would you need to post a
    question in the first place?

    Glad to make your day

8up...going to make use of his new found opposable thumbs by sitting here
and shoving them straight up my ass.
