Toyota Trucks: great new sound under the truck

great new sound under the truck
95 Tacoma, V6 4WD, 123,000 miles, original clutch
Sound sounds like it's coming from anywhere from under the cab to the rear
differential, it's hard to tell.
Notable points about sound;
-sounds like high pitched whistling
-just started in the last week
-happens in 2WD or 4WD
-stops when I put a load on the engine, i.e., when I am actively
accellerating or when I am using the engine to decelerate
-if the sound is happening, I can put it in neutral and it (the sound) will
continue
-does not occurr when the vehicle is not moving
-if I am highway driving and just giving it enough gas to maintain the
current speed, the sound can and does start; if I accelerate a bit, I can
make the sound stop but it will start again if I let acceleration approach
zero, i.e. constant velocity
The clutch does not slip. It does let out high though.
Any thoughts?

Just to be sure, check your brake pads. They can squeal if they are low
even if you are not applying the brakes.

Re: great new sound under the truck
I had an 89 4X4 and the rear end had whine in the differential and now a 99
Tacoma that has a similiar whine, a little higer pitched that comes and goes
exactly as you state. Most like again in differential. If it was like my
first truck the whine will get worse very very slowly.

Re: great new sound under the truck
Actually the brakes do squeal. They have since the goodyear dealer put them
in. My fault; will only allow genuine toyota pads for the rest of my life.
I do believe the pads are in fact near replacement though, but the two
sounds are totally different and I can tell this new one is not coming from
the front pads.
Thank you though.

Re: great new sound under the truck
It's a bearing in the transmission. At 123k miles I will opt to have a new
one (clutch) installed and have the bearing replaced too. Oh yeah, this is
why I put money into savings each month.... This isn't a repair I want to
do myself.

Re: great new sound under the truck
Hehe, I have done it myself. Its doable, but a PAIN. They really get you
on labor for this though, especially considering they have all the tools to
make it really easy.

Re: great new sound under the truck
You sure it's a bearing in the tranny? It sounds very much like a bad
pinion bearing in the rear differential.
