Garmin GPS: GPSmap76cs vs GPSmap76CSx

GPSmap76cs vs GPSmap76CSx
I have the GPSmap76cs and like it. But in northern CA the dense trees are a
problem. I'm thinking about "upgrading" to the newer GPSmap76CSx for the
"better" chip inside, in order to catch the signals when I'm under heavy
trees...
From those who have used both, what is your experience with the newer model?
In real life situations, does it make a difference when under heavy foliage?
Thanks for your responses in advance,
Mike

Re: GPSmap76cs vs GPSmap76CSx
I have both the 60CS and the 60CSx (same electronics as the 76 series,
different casing). The CSx is a huge improvement over the CS if you are
hiking under trees, in canyons, etc. On hikes where the CS was
unusable, the CSx never loses signal and provides an accurate track and
distance.

I second that
I second that. I also have both 60cs and 60csx and it locks on quickly and
it never loses its way. I suspect the 76csx will give similarly improved
results.

I upgraded from the 76CS to the 76CSX and am glad I did it for a few
reasons.
1. When hiking witth the 76CS I had to use an external antenna velcro'd
to my shoulder if I wanted to carry the GPS in a pouch attached to my
belt. With the 76CSX there is no need for the external antenna. It even
works in narrow canyons and under dense foliage where the 76CS had
problems even with an external antenna.
2. Expandable memory.

Re: GPSmap76cs vs GPSmap76CSx
I also have the 76CS, and have wondered about the "value" of trading
up. How about this issue with WAAS reception and the new Sirf chipset?
Those of you with the CSX model...what is your experience with WAAS?
Thanks in advance!

Hmm, because of everyones nice replies, I may now upgrade from the

I don't know whether to thank you or curse you. :-)

I've never found WAAS of more than casual interest. The accuracy
without it enabled is very adequate for driving or hiking.
My 60Cx far outperforms my old 60C under difficult conditions: Tree
cover; urban and rural canyons; indoors. Since I seldom enabled WAAS on
the 60C, there is NO downside for me.

I have the 76csx on order from pcnation. I did the garmin comparison and
with the rebate, it almost became a no brainer...

WAAS support sucks. I have to boot my device (60CSx) each time I drive

Without WAAS it works great. For my use I can't see any reason to turn on
WAAS again.
When geocaching I (almost) always find what I'm looking for - within
threes and other places where the view of the sky is limited.

I guess none of those planes using WAAS had better fly though a tunnel!
Ditto .. same when I was using my old 60C.
