    GPSMap60cs Battery problem

Here's the story: Put in fresh batteries, going along ok and after about an
hour, the battery indicator goes from fully-charged or at most one bar down
    to Low Battery.

It does this with alkallines and NIMHs.

    Any suggestions?

    Steve

Sounds like a hardware problem that Garmin will need to fix.

Good question .. if Li is an option. But I doubt such a dramatic change
would result. I've never paid much attention to what battery type I
have selected (use Alkalines, NiMH and Li cells) and have not seen
anything like what is described below.

Another thing to try: Turn off the Altimeter and Compass (sensor
functions) and see if that solves the problem .. i.e., if there is
successive current drain in the sensors.

I have had a similar problem.

I put in fresh batteries for the day.
I plug it into the truck with the external cable.
I turn it on before leaving.
I drive to the trail head and unplug the GPS.
I hit enter to acknowledge loss of external power

In bright sun, I did not notice that it defaulted to full backlighting.

The full backlighting discharged the batteries quickly.

No, that, unfortunately, is not the problem. Another problem is that,
although it is less than one year old, I failed to register so the unit
would be treated as Out of warranty. The flat fee is $150.

Bummer, Steve. At that point I would start thinking on a Cx unit.

As long as you have the paper work that should be enough.
If the paper work was not in the box, How would one know that it needed to
    be sent in ?

I never send in any paper work for that stuff. It just leads to junk mail. I
never sent in anything for my nuvi. But do have all the paper work. And
while I thought I had a problem with the other day. A tech support guy said
I may have to send it in. He asked me for the ser number and said that was
all I would need to cross ship another one out. I was lucky, He had a tech
guy call me and he was able to fix the problem over the phone.
