Corvette: Goin to the track? (story)

Goin to the track? (story)
My hobby is pinball machines. I have a small 10 game collection. I've
met some great people because of this interest of mine. I would be
like the 'white trash' collector because all these guys are so well
off. One guy I was giving some tech advise to informed me that he has
a couple of Porsches during one of our many emails back and forth
trying to get his game running. One he races and one he's working on.
Anyway, I tell him about my 'Vette. He said it sounds sweet and he
invited me out in the spring to some track where his Porsche Club
meets. Said his buddies would love to run with a Corvette. Not sure
what that means, but it sounds like racing to me.
Sounds like a blast! But I need tapes or DVDs on shifting. Do you guys
know any good ones? I don't mind getting beat. But I don't want to get
beat because I shifted like an idiot.

1) Find the nearest NHRA track.
2) Go there on "test and tune" night and practice.
3) Chat with the guys that drive dragsters.
4) Ask the local track if they have any classes at all.
5) Post on alt.autos.sport.nhra to ask if there are any local drivers from
your local track.
Where do you live?

Re: Goin to the track? (story)
I live in Saline MI.
I received a few private and somewhat scarey responces to my original
post. I'm pretty sure my new friend (whom I haven't met yet) isn't
trying to get me into anything too serious. This isn't about some guys
living out a 2 Fast 2 Furious dream. At least I don't think it is...I
guess I used the word 'racing' when I should have used a more casual
term.
Thanks for the tips

Re: Goin to the track? (story)
Relax. Odds are the group your new friend is talking about is a Porsche
Club of America group. The PCA holds lots of performance events, from
autocrosses, high speed driving, driving schools, and races. However,
driving schools have a two-fold agenda. The first is to provide track time
and some instruction so you get used to driving your Porsche at high speeds
and not kill yourself. (911s are somewhat tail happy and an inexperienced
driving can get killed if they don't know how to handle and drive with
oversteer at high speed.)
The second is to provide lots of high speed driving time in street cars that
you can't get anywhere else.
There are also Porsche races, which are not as common and are for Porsches
only. It is doubtful they would let you run in one of these.
You will enjoy yourself and learn a lot. Even though there are the
occasional trolls, the Porsche guys who actually drive their cars hard are
decent guys interested in mainly one thing: driving fast and well. You
should be able to learn from them. You will always find a jerk, but you are
as apt to find those in Corvettes as in Porsches.
Even in the drivers school, there will be "racing". It is a natural.
However, it isn't real racing as you are not out to win but to learn. You
will dice with others, but depending on how they have it set up, you may be
restricted as to where you can pass, when you can go full out, and other
such items.
In SCCA drivers schools, at the end of the DS, there are usually at least
one race. Most that I have instructed at would have a couple of three lap
races and then a 5 lap race. After all, a drivers school in SCCA is all
about racing, so you need to have a couple of races at the end to put it all
to use and see how what you learned fits together in the heat of
competition.
The intent of the PCA drivers school is as much for driving high speed in a
high performance vehicle as it is to racing.
In BMW driver schools, they don't race, so the DS is for high speed driving
and just fast track time.
Shifting at a drag strip and on a road course are two different animals so
unless you can't shift at all, it wouldn't do much to go to the drags.
Forget the dragster guys, the shifter is set up completely different from
anything in a street car.
Good luck and have fun.

I don't know much about this, but the AHRA still exists and even has a
street racing class. I have only raced NHRA of late, and a long time ago
IHRA.
