Jeep: GC key won't work

GC key won't work
2001 GC
Key sometimes won't unlock the steering column or start the truck. Acts like
it's the wrong key. Sometimes turning it over works and the column unlocks
and the engine turns over. Most times, the column won't lock, you can turn
the steering wheel even though the key is removed. Tried the spare key with
no luck. Seems random, some times everything works fine, other times it take
a lot of fussing with the key to finally get it to unlock and start.
Any ideas?

Re: GC key won't work
I suspect the steering column interlock or whatever it is called. My
knowledge of this is fairly vague, but I think there is a mechanism that
keeps the steering column locked and keeps the gear shift immobile until the
key is turned, and those mechanisms can either go out of adjustment or wear
out.
I wish I could be more specific on this, gut I have never taken one apart to
really know what is in there.

Re: GC key won't work
It could be dirt in the ignition lock cylinder. take the collar off the
stiring column, and turnt the key to the on position. you should see a hole
on the lock cylinder with a pin in it. push the pin in with something and
pull the lock cylinder out. spray it real good with wd-40 or similar. if
it doesen't fix the problem, at least id won't cost anything besides a
little time.
