Nissan Maxima: Is Gas Mileage bad in these cars?

This is about what I get,

Distance travelled: Km
Amount of gas required: Litres
Metric (Canada) 11.46 L/100KM
Metric (Europe) 8.73 KM/L
US Gallons 20.65 MPG
Imperial Gallons 24.65 MPG



I usually fill up when I am close to empty and reset the trip odemeter every
fill-up.

This is predominantly city driving in Ottawa.

If I do highway, I use the cruise control as much as possible, and on the
car and van this tends to maximise my fuel consumption by another 50 to 80
km or so.

I keep the tire pressure at spec. with weekly checks and this also gives me
good mileage.

My '96 Maxima GXE averages 28 miles per gallon. It ranges from 24 to 32
MPG. I think that is very good mileage for the power and size of this car.
I just wish it was designed for regular gas rather than premium. I ran
mid-grade for a long time, but the check engine light came on and the
mechanic suggested running premium. Since then the light has not come back
on.
