Interesting that my '02 XLT with tow package (3.73 axle)
does a bit better. Perhaps not having 4 wheel drive
helps. Anyway, not long after I bought the vehicle, I
made a 2700 mile round trip from California to Colorado
and back over a period of 4 days and averaged 21.2 MPG
for the entire trip. I had the cruise control set some-
where between 75 and 82 MPH for the vast majority of the
trip. My Explorer had about 5000 miles on the odometer
at the beginning of the trip and there was one person
and baggage going out and three people with baggage on
the return trip. Beat the EPA highway rating by .2 MPG.
Winds were light and variable and the traffic was light
    (3 days after 9/11).

Forgot to state that the total load was about 600lb. With the 3.55 axle,
2000 rpm is about 68mph with 245x16 std tires.

The message center on my '99 always shows about 10% better fuel
mileage than I get by actually calculating based on miles and amount
    of fuel added.

Not bad, but the smaller Sport does even better. With the 3.73 possi
4X4, 255/70/16s, and the SOHC 4.0L I maxed out at 23.6MPG! Lets add
some clarity to this. The terrain was hilly 2 lain hwy for about 30%,
flat 2 lain Hwy for 60% and city for 10%. Speed was kept around 58MPH
(Hwy) which on the tach equals just around 1900. Load and winds were
light and the truck has 22000 miles on it. Bug deflector and running
boards installed, they say that changes thing a bit. City starts were
very slow of the line just to maximize the milage. I did a similar
trip, floored it to passed a few cars, quicker off the line, etc and I
    got 21.1.
I have yet to make a 100% flat Hwy run with it to see what she will
    max out at.
If I had to guess, maybe just under 25 MPG.

All other things being equal, the lighter Sport should
get a little better fuel mileage than the 4-door XLT.
However, if I drove my XLT at 58 MPH instead of 75 to
82 MPH, I'm sure it would do considerably better than
the 21.2 MPG I experienced on my 2700 mile trip.

Agreed 100%. At 58MPH, you know your going slow when little old men
with hats pass you!! It's just interesting where she tops out at.

My message center reads high on gas mileage also. One other thing I forgot
to say is all the fuel I used was reg unleaded, no ethanhol. I find it worth
the extra 4 cents/gal in increased gas mileage. It's also a 4 wheel drive. I
can also make 20 mpg at a steady 60 mph.
