Toyota: Fuel mileage 91 octane vs. 87

Fuel mileage 91 octane vs. 87
Some time ago, some posters had a discussion on whether premium fuel gave
you lower gas mileage compared to regular in a car designed for regular. At
that time I decided to record results for myself in my Integra.
(We're going to conduct the same tests with the Tercel as well, starting
tomorrow).
Test car is a manual transmission Acura Integra with 1.8L 4-cyl engine
intended for 87 pump octane gas, has multiport FI and 213,600 miles. Car is
driven about 90% or more high-speed highway, usually 70 mph and over and
for periods exceeding a half hour per trip in relatively light traffic.
These driving conditions will also be true for the Tercel, so will make an
excellent comparison.
So...
REGULAR (87 pump octane)
------------------------
From the period Apr 11/03 to June 10/03
car consumed 115.2 US gal
and was driven 3,580.3 miles,
resulting in 31.08 mpg.
PREMIUM (91 pump octane)
----------------
From the period June 11/03 to Aug 19/03,
car consumed 103.63 US gal
and was driven 3,014.7 miles,
resulting in 29.09 mpg.
(car was idle for 1½ weeks due to holidays)
It is possible that the lower mileage on premium is actually the result of
ambient heat, with average air temperatures being much higher during the
premium test. Unfortunately, I will need to re-run the experiment again at
the same time next year to verify this hypothesis.

It's difficult to access economy when the driver knows 91 octane
or 87 octane is in the tank.

Why? Going in, TeGGer did not have an MPG expectation one way or the
other.

Same thing occurs with the '03 Corolla and the ol Prizm. Lower
mileage using Premium grades, more so in city driving. Both cars
have 87 octane recommendation. While the Prizm had no knock sensor,
the Corolla does. An interesting side note is both of my Honda
motorcycles exhibit a similar drop using Premium. All four vehicles
are four valve head designs.

Re: Fuel mileage 91 octane vs. 87
I think that if you use the "recommended" fuel for your vehicle as stated by
the manufacture, you would get the optimal fuel economy. Running premium on
engines designed to run on the recommended fuel of regular unleaded, will
only cost you more $$ but may or may not offer you additional benefits.
Has anyone ran any tests on the 1MZ-FE V6 Camry engines using regular vs.
premium grade fuel? In my observations, I noticed a slightly better fuel
avg. using premium as well as smoother, quicker acceleration. Of course
YMMV.

I wonder if using higher octane fuel in a high-mileage engine--or one used
regularly at high engine speeds--would help prevent detonation?

Does running regularly at high engine speeds increase the problem of
detonation?

I tried the higher octane fuel in two Cavalier's I owned in the mid
and late 80's. Both lost gas milage and seemed to have a little less
power.
Once I bought the new '94 and '03 Corolla's I stuck with the
recommended 87 octane. Both cars have always gave me 35 to 40 mpg.
I figure the engineering is good enough for the 87 I will stick with
it.
I still use Chevron with the Techron additive as my favorite . Texaco
is my other favorite usually when traveling. The new Shell is also a
clean burn gasoline. I use it if the price if right.
I have heard of some Ford engines that get better performance and gas
milage from using high octane fuel.

1999 Camry LE V6 (1MZ-FE) here:
87 octane yielded 26-28 MPG on a mixed commute of 14 miles, warm climate,
400' elevation, no hills (50% highway, 30% 45mph-ish, 20% <45mph). Tires at
44PSI hot.
Driving with an egg under the throttle.
93 octane yielded approximately 1MPG improvement in the same driving
circumstances (to the best of my ability)
I am currently using 89 (mid grade) on the last 6 tanks and still appear to
be at 27-29MPG (with a best of 31MPG and a worst of 25MPG)

If he can behave behind the wheel exactly the same with either fuel
powering his car then he's got to be the most domesticated brain
dead male on this planet.
Since he's an enthusiast I doubt there's a minute that goes by he's
forgotten what type of fuel he's got in the tank.
