Jeep: Front Tow Hooks
-
Re: Front Tow Hooks
Don't fool yourself and think that there are "stock friendly" trails. I
thought that too when I first started out. Then after I caved in my rocker
panels, bashed in my grille, and broke a transfer case I realized that the
only "stock friendly" trails are the paved highways!
If you want to get by on the cheap, buy a beat up Cherokee (XJ style , NOT a
Grand Cherokee), and pay a local welding shop to weld plates on it to
protect the transfer case, oil pan, and tranny. Then put angle iron or
diamond plate (kits available for $100.00) over the rocker panels and go
baby go!
My latest Jeep toy is a 1988 Wagoneer limited (same as an XJ Cherokee). I
bought it for a few hundred dollars with a rebuild motor and tranny
installed! They had a goofy cooling system in that year and the seller was
completely disgusted because it wanted to overheat all the time. I stuck a
used radiator in it from a different year Cherokee and now it's a real
runner!
It even has woodgrain on the sides for "camo" when I'm off-roading!

Re: Front Tow Hooks
Tim,
Don't bolt or weld anything to your "frame". You will need a tow hook kit
with brackets or you may be able to find a front receiver hitch and use a
tow hook. If you need them right away there are a couple of Jeep shops near
you. Just Jeeps off the 400 and National 4WD Centre in Burlington. They are
both pricey but when it comes to shipping heavy items from the U.S. you may
end up cheaper buying locally.
Off roading can be expensive but you can minimize risk by knowing what your
rig is capable of. The weak links in a stock rig are axles and u-joints. If
you're sane with the throttle and not ashamed to take a tow, there's a good
chance you may never break either. Getting over zealous and picking bad
lines causes damage... but it sure is fun.
For $1000 you can equip your rig to handle a heck of a lot in Ontario. It'll
never be a great mud-runner or rock crawler but the GC's are good climbers.
Invest in hooks, tires, a budget boost, quick disconnects and a couple of
straps.

Tim, (and believe me this is all meant in a friendly "ribbing the new

<grin>.
I've seen people do everything from totally bogging in mud (exhausting
but not usually expensive) all the way to blowing out a transfer case
and/or busting an axle on "moderate" trails.
My (daily driver) rig isn't a pavement princess but it's still really
a creampuff, I run a mostly stock 97 Cherokee sport and it gets used
to run simple (though steep) trails and pastures at a wildlife refuge
where I do volunteer work. I look at all but the least challenging of
the rocky trails others try and I turn tail and run and that is the
plain truth of it!
This is why I'm not BROKE making a totally killer rig <grin>. Someday
I'm going to pick up a Wrangler chassis and then do the drivetrain,
etc mostly from scratch and THEN I'll try those insane trails like the
hammer and so forth, but until then.... well, you know.

Re: Front Tow Hooks
Front reciever is cheaper and more useful. I got one for my 89 Cherokee from
drawtite. I got mine from e-trailer.com and I am very satisfied.
