Ford Explorer: Ford Explorer 2002 paint cracking.

Ford Explorer 2002 paint cracking.
I have a black 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer that has cracking paint on
both the hood and roof. The cracks look like spider webs or small
veins. Has everyone else experienced this with the new model
Explorer? It appears that Ford has yet to solve their paint problem.

Re: Ford Explorer 2002 paint cracking.
I was hoping it was a place that the dealer fixed, but I have something that
could be described as a "spider web" look on my roof... I noticed it when I was
waxing this last time. The thing is, I don't know how long its been there, or if
it was there when I bought it :-/
Does the warranty on the paint go further than the bumper-to-bumper 36,000mi/3yr
warranty? or is that just the Corrosion/Rust I'm thinking of?

The paint on my '93 Explorer still looks like new. But, it is garaged at
night and I do wash and wax it pretty often (wax twice a year - wash when
dirty).

Re: Ford Explorer 2002 paint cracking.
Tim,
Keep an eye out.. It gets worse, much worse. My entire hood has
these cracks on it. I believe that it is covered under the 36,000
mile/3yr. warranty. Definitely have it looked at and reported before
your warranty expires. Is your Explorer by any chance black?

Re: Ford Explorer 2002 paint cracking.
I have a very early 2002 Eddie Bauer, manufactured in October of 2001.
Mine is Toreador Red. I waxed it right away with Nu Finish (and several
times since then), and all of the paint still looks brand new.
No problems---and that was with two brutally hot summers and one very cold
winter so far.

Re: Ford Explorer 2002 paint cracking.
Nope, mine's the Deep Wedgewood Blue (although people would argue it looks black
in the evening/night and purple during the day... lol)
Thanks for the info. I already have paint wearing off of my doors and rear
hatch (the plastic moldings: the back, the two on both sides of the back door.
On the doors, all 4 doors, the solid black shiney plastic "guards" I guess you
might say, that are going up right next to the windows)... they are all looking
like the paint is rubbing off. I only have about 1500 miles left on my warranty
(but I do have an extended warranty). But I plan on taking it in next weekend
and having them see about replacing those.

Re: Ford Explorer 2002 paint cracking.
At what interval do you consider to be waxing "too much"? I wax once every 3 to
4 months (even though the wax I use says it's good for a year... I just wax
whenever the paint doesn't feel very smooth or "rubbery" when I run my finger
across it). So, about 3 or 4 times a year... is that too often?

Re: Ford Explorer 2002 paint cracking.
I have black 2002 Mountaineer, and my friend just noticed this problem on my hood. There are 4 or 5 spots that are a little bigger than a quarter, where the paint is "cracking" or "checking". I had a 1996 Explorer sport, and the entire hood was covered with this. I plan on talking to the dealer this week, especially since I'm still under the 3/36 warranty. Let me know if you find out anything.
