    Fog Lights E46

I thought I would give you all some info that might save you some money. I
am the happy owner of my 3rd M3 but have found a problem that can easily be
    remedied by a $40 item.

After having replaced the lens in my fog lights due to rock cracks for the
3rd time on my 2002 I decided to apply Xpel protectors. They worked like a
charm. When I bought my 2003 I tried to buy a set before they were cracked
but Xpel said that they could not guarantee that they would fit. I waited 2
mos and tried again. When I went to apply them it was too late. One was
    already cracked.

Take my advise. It is not a question of whether or not these lenses crack
but when. I'm not sure why BMW doesn't use plastic lenses but I would guess
it's the bottom line. BTW All models of the M3 E46 lights are the same.

Had both of my fog light lenses crack on one long highway
trip, I contended it was very hot lenses being splashed by
cold water that caused them to crack. Made a deal with my
BMW dealer, he replaced one, I replaced the other.

Immediately bought the Xpel product for all of my front
lights (headlights, turn signal lights, foglights).

My cost was about $55 (us) but was a set pre-cut by the
manufacturer to fit my car exactly.....I didn't have to
    cut anything to size.

Have had ZERO problems since. After I applied Xpel, I had
a bunch of water pockets trapped underneath (you use a
combination of water and alcohol to apply Xpel) but after
about 3 weeks all of them were gone. Great product, I
agree....can't even tell they're there now.

I bet it wasn't cold water on the lens -- I would think that any cheapo fog lamp
maker - and there are dozens over here in Euro land - would check that little
bogey first. In the 57 years I have been on this planet I have never seen a fog
lamp or headlamps crack due to cold water on the warm glass.

What does crack or break the lens is a hit from stones, gravel, miscellaneous
road debris and kamikaze waster ousels or other strange small livestock wishing
    a similar fate.........
