Garmin GPS: eTrex Vista Cx Altimeter Problem

eTrex Vista Cx Altimeter Problem
To All:
I have a perplexing problem with the Total Ascent field on my eTrex
Vista Cx's altimeter page.
I "manually" calibrate the altimeter at the trailhead, using the
elevation on a USGS 7.5 minute quad. I hike to the high point of my
trip and the altimeter page shows a very accurate maximum elevation. I
return to the trailhead and the altimeter page shows a total ascent
significantly less than that of the max elevation minus the min
elevation. At home, when I review the profile of the track in
MapSource, the minimum and maximum elevations are very accurately recorded.
This problem has repeated it self on several occasions, including days
that had a bluebird sky and very little barometric change.
Apparently the altimeter on my my eTrex Vista Cx can record very
accurate elevations but something is going wrong with total ascent
computations. Is this a known problem/bug with the eTrex Vista Cx or am
I doing something wrong and this is operator error?
Thank you,
Steve

Its not you - I saw the same problem on a few hikes north of Las Vegas
last month but never followed up on it.
Interested to hear what Garmin says about this.

Re: eTrex Vista Cx Altimeter Problem
Some of the other gps's have a note on recent software that old
firmware incorrectly calculated the total ascent. If the firmware
were largely shared (which is it would be in any clueful company) then
this could be a problem across the whole line.

Changes made from version 2.60 to 2.70:
...
* Fix issue where total ascent and total descent were incorrectly computed.

I will let Garmin know that the eTrex Vista Cx is also effected.

It sounds like it has the opposite problem I have with a
GPSmap 76S. The altimeter is a bit noisy so the output has
to be filtered to some extent. Too much filtering and the
total elevation gain will be to low. Too little filtering
and you'll gain a 100 ft. in a short period of time while
standing still.
If I climb 1,000 ft., the total ascent in the 76S will
probably be somewhere from 1100 to 1200 ft. If I do
the climb very fast, I might get the gain in the 1050
to 1100 ft. range. If I stop a lot to take pictures,
talk to other hikers, etc., I might get a gain in the
1200 to 1250 range.
