    Engine differences

Does anyone know the differences between the M42 and the M44 engines used in
the E36 318is apart from the fact that one is a 1.8 and the other is a 1.9.
Many people say the M44 is an 'improved' version of the M42 but i'm hoping
someone can be slightly more specific.

    regards

M44 has roller bearings on the cam followers, newer design of DME (you
don't chip it you download new software). I think some (all?) had an
electric fan instead of a viscous coupling, different belt/pulley design
    (serpentine belt).

E30 318iS M42s didn't have knock sensors or DISA variable length intake
system. I think the early camshaft had a different profile but can't
prove that one. E36s M42 seem to have a little more mid-range torque.

M42 uses an air flow meter, M44 uses a hot film meter.

Is there any way of "upgrading" to 318is?
