BMW: Engine Cleaning

Engine Cleaning
Just picked-up my first BMW an 1983 E23, 733I(a). Love the car. The engine
is a bit on the dirty side and just don't want to take a hose to it. What
would you (all) recommend the best procedure to get it spik-n-span again?
My thanks in advance,
Dave

Re: Engine Cleaning
I just cleaned an oily engine. I first sprayed it down except the
non-electrical areas (mostly alternator) with a engine cleaner/degreaser,
let it sit for about 5 minutes and then pressure washed it. Then took it on
about a 20 minute highway drive to get the engine hot and dry it out. Looks
good and no problems as I see. I'm not sure if I would do it on my BMW, this
was an old Buick.

Re: Engine Cleaning
"Gunk" brand spray engine cleaner works well and is reasonably priced.
Follow the directions, especially the bit about brushing heavy deposits.
Instead of a hose, I use a garden sprayer filled with boiling hot water for
rinsing. Easier to control and the hot water dissolves the grease much
better than water from the tap.

Re: Engine Cleaning
I use Gunk foaming spray (not the high-pressure spray). Let it sit 20
minutes, then rinse with high pressure, being careful not to spray wires or
distributor.
