My experience with an Echo was for about a week last year as a rental
car. It seemed rather cheap and "plasticy" but was everything I
needed in a rental car. I bought a 2003 Corolla LE about 14 months
ago (got around 18K miles on it) and it is a MUCH nicer car. It's an
automatic and gets around 30 mpg mixed city/hiway driving (San Diego
area). I think the actual quality, meaning durability and reliability
is probably about the same, but I would have to own both for a long
time to really speak knowledgeably about that.

    Re: ECHO Questions

My impression is that Echo owners really like their cars. Styling was
an issue for some. The Corolla as of late (03 models) have some
problems with rattles especially in the dash. I am thinking of trading
in my 00 Mustang convertible in on one of these two models.

I've had mine coming up on a year. It's made in Japan. I've had no
problems at all. It's just what I expected - small on the outside,
roomy on the inside, reasonably comfortable, well equipped but without
a lot of gadgets and toys, good handling, and averaging 49 mpg - a
    perfect commuter car.

    I have a 2000 (2 door, 5-speed, AC, premium radio/casette/CD player, CA
emissions), and they were all from Japan then, but I don't know about more
recent ones. I paid under $12K total in 01/00, have 51K miles, and KBB says
the street retail value is about $8,500.
