Toyota: Echo antenna problem

    Echo antenna problem

Is there a trick to using the antenna on an Echo hatchback?

I installed my own radio (it didn't come with one) and plugged in the
antenna lead to the back as per usual. My reception is really bad. This
radio used to be in my Rav4, then in my Civic, so I know it's still working.

Is there a split in the line, or some place where it needs to be connected?
Or worse yet.. is the antenna on the top of the car a phony, because I
didn't have the dealer install a radio? Since there is SOME reception, I
have to assume a part of that antenna wire is active, just doesn't a seem
    like the whole thing.

BTW- The Hatch is Back !

i know that the antenna is real because when mine is fully down, i get no
    reception.
try checking the plug at the radio. some antenna plugs/sockets are slightly
    different.
just a guess, unless the installation screwed it up.\
    good luck, sam

check that your radio is properly earthed. poor earth path can cause
    radio reception to be noisy

There should be an adjusting screw on the radio near where the antenna plugs
in. It is used to match the impedance of the antenna to the radio. Turn
this screw either way until you get the best reception.

This trimmer screw is a thing of the past, new radios are all auto
    tuners now.

Some old school stuff all right! I had a 1964 Ford F-100 and it had a
thumb knob in the back for trimming the antenna. Yes, I've owned Fords
too. This one had a 292 V8, I overhauled it, removed the auto and put in
a granny 4 spd. Was a good truck, only had 68,000 miles when I got it in
1981, but the guy just never changed oil.

I don't buy trucks but if you want to try a really nice
well built truck, drive and price the new 2004 F150. Miles ahead
of any truck on the road, IMO Even the base truck
has 4 doors and they are all V8's. I got to drive several
versions at Pocono at last month, even the V6 diesel that
    comes out later
