BMW: E39 Sport Seats are killing my lumbar spine

E39 Sport Seats are killing my lumbar spine

Just bought a CPO 2000 528i with sport seats.
When test driving the car, I was unfortunately paying
more attention to the handling than the seats. I
    had extensively driven a non-sport 1997 528i
with comfort seats a few weeks prior to this
    purchase and had no problems.

The sport seats have a very stiff spring that pushes
the seat back foam hard into your lumbar spine.
I removed the seat back cover and
Ty-Rap'd the spring to the seat frame.
    That helped considerably, but
the shape of the foam itself and it's position
relative to the seat cushion is still pushing
too hard against my lumbar spine.

I found an interesting article on oregonaero
    regarding pilot seats:
    http://www.oregonaero.com/p2021_2001.htm#photos

Photo number 4 of the "painful" seats seems to
describe exactly what I'm feeling. I could buy
the cushions from Oregon aero, but then my
heated seat feature would be next to useless.

I know my spine is different than most other
drivers as I find I have to always let the lumbar
pressure out of other people's vehicles when I
    sit in their car.

Does anyone know of another cure besides
    pulling back the spring?

Also, if I do buy a BMW 16-way comfort seat
(with adjustable lumbar), does anyone know
how well all the electrical connections will mate
    with my current wiring harness?

    Thanks!

You should be able to drop the comfort seats right in as all the controls
are on the seat itself. Seat swaps have been done successfully, but unless
you can find someone who's anxious to dump their comfort seats (they're
fairly uncommon to begin with) it's going to be an expensive ($thousands)
    proposition.

You might have better luck finding standard seats with the lumbar option.

A competent upholstery shop should be able to reshape the padding to fit you
    better.
