BMW: E36 Body : Where to find?

E36 Body : Where to find?
Hi,
Does anyone have a clue as to where I may find a body for an E36? Perhaps a
car with major mechanical problems, serious interior damage or the like?
Body needed to repair my car, which was involved in a major collision. It
seems that salvage yards have thus far been of no help as they prefer to
sell individual pieces rather than an entire body. Thanks in advance for any
help!! rr.com

Often at auto auctions, or ebay

Re: E36 Body : Where to find?
Your best bet is going to be to find a car that was completely totalled on
the opposite end/side that yours was. Often interior damage doesnt result in
a car that is totalled, same for engine damage. Even if an ins company
totalled a car with interior/engine damage it would probably go higher at an
auto auction than youre looking to pay. You may also want to look for a
flooded car. The electrics are shot but the body is unharmed. Check out
www.iaai.com and www.fosterauto.com. What year/model do you have exactly and
what is the damage?

Try Vine's BMW in Birmingham, AL. IIRC, it's www.vinesbmw.com

John, have you tried the BMW speciality junk yard in Grover, NC? Pretty
sure its Chris Imports 704-937-3932.
Also, my BMW mechanic in Rock Hill may have a lead. He eats and breathes

Re: E36 Body : Where to find?
The car is a 93 325is, which was in impeccable condition before the
accident. It had a very nice interior (luxury package, power sport seats,
wood trim, etc) that I feel is worth saving as most cars I've looked at lack
those options, and most cars don't seem to be in as good of condition as was
mine unless they are '98 or newer. Damage is to the front bumper cover,
grill, hood, windshield, front left fender, drivers door, area on unibody
above and below drivers door. The damaged unibody is my primary reason for
looking for a totalled car. I almost found one, in that I saw an ad for a 95
318is with blown engine. I called the number listed and unfortunately the
owner had traded in the car one week prior for a "hefty" sum of $500.
Thanks for your help, I've got www.iaai.com on my "watch list" already, and
I'll definately add fosterauto.

FYI, what you mean by "unibody" is the rocker panel and A-pillar.
In unibody cars - which is almost everything built these days - the
*entire* body is a single unit (assembled from many pieces.) For
instance, the fenders (front and rear) are load-bearing structures
(rather than the car having a frame that supports the suspension,
body and engine/drivetrain.)
IMO, you're better off looking for an old but intact body with
blown engine and/or trashed interior.

Personally, I think you'd be better off recovering just the wood trim &
seats from yours and getting another full car to re-fit them to.
