Corvette: Door rattle

Door rattle
My passenger door rattles when you close it on my '95. I hear it when
I close the door after my wife (or kids) gets in or out. I am NOT
slamming it. It's something in the sideview mirror. Is this something
I can work on? Something just need to be tightened? If I could get the
mirror out, I'm sure i could find the problem.

Re: Door rattle
Are you certain that it's not the window channel rattling when you close the
door? That's a pretty common rattle source for all years...

Re: Door rattle -- mirror repair

Hi Phil,
My bride of 40 years specializes in wedging pax side
GM mirrors into the counterbalance spring on her
garage door. (once with her '85, once with her '89,
twice with her '96 -- her 2001 has a collapsible mount
so it's survived an encounter with only paint touchup.)
The bad news is that mirrors vary, in any model year,
with which sub-vendor made the guts. The dealer
replaces as a unit for what has been an increasing price
(last estimate was about $ 400 including the paint job.)
The good news is that the passenger side probably isn't
heated.
If you are game, first arm yourself with some glue,
mastic, seam filler etc. Then go to a discount auto glass
place and buy a matching replacement glass mirror
( < $ 20 -- look for distortion--some cheapy ones
from China not only make things look far away, they
don't do it with uniformity). While you're there ask for
a small quantity of glue that will not ruin the mirror's
silvering when you re-install it. Any acid producing
stuff (silicone glue for instance) isn't a good idea as
it will leech through the varnish & attack the silvering.
Next, support the mirror backing plate with some wedges
and pry the mirror from its plastic (ABS) mount. Use
gentle steady pressure here. Avoid reacting the force
against the mirror mechanism (some force on the center
pivot is inevitable). Accept that you are going to break
the glass. Find out what's loose and, if necessary, drill
some extra holes through the mirror back plate for screw
driver (or glue gun) access. If the problem is in the
screw-jacks or mount for the mirror backing, then you
get to improvise. All three mirrors I've worked on have
jack screws that pull out of the motorized jack nuts and
can be pushed back in (while someone plays with the
electric controls). The center pivot has always been in
a resiliant socket. If you break the center pivot, ABS
pipe cement will usually make a sturdy repair. (You
must hold your tongue a certain way to put things
back together.)
Last step is to clean the mount and glue the new mirror
in place. Secure it with tape for a day or two until
the glue sets. (Or return to the glass guy and have
him cement and tape it.)
All this failing, you're off to the dealer and you've
had a lo-cost & fun alternative to an afternoon of
Charger football.
Now, how bad was that rattle ??
