Dodge Strattus 2001-Engine Bad
My girlfriend bought her Strattus 2001 brand new. It only has 40,000 miles
on it. It started to make a "clicking" sound. She immediately took it to
the mechanic, he told her the engine was shot. Took to a 2nd mechanic,
didn't tell her what the first told her. He too told her the engine was
shot. It is not under warrantee anymore, but it only has 40,000 and Dodge
said they would only charge her $5,000 for the new engine. They claim
there was a recall on it but she never got anything and we can't find
anything. Is there anything that can be done? Where do we look for
recalls, etc.

Which engine?

Re: Dodge Strattus 2001-Engine Bad
The car is a 2001 with 40,000 miles on so it should be still covered by
warranty. As for the recall they should of sent her something in the
mail. The only thing i could think of is that since she didnt reply to
the recall and the motor broke because of this she voided the warranty.

No way in hell is any engine in a stratus worth 5,000 dollars. A 2001 is
not worth that much more than that now.

Is that the 2.7 liter engine? If so, there are some pending class
action lawsuits on that engine, and pressure is mounting to have it
recalled...there is NO recall on it at present...or to have some kind of
compensation for owners whose engines fail early, at less than 100,000
miles or so. The 2.7 liter engine has had a higher than average failure
rate, usually due to sludging of the oil, resulting in starvation of oil
to critical engine parts.
The best way to avoid that is to change the oil frequently, according to
the Severe Service maintenance schedule, and to use full synthetic oil.
YES, that costs a bit more per oil change, and you will be changing it
twice as often than the 5000 or 6000 miles that some people do; but it's
a lot cheaper than a new engine.
Heck...some idiots never change the oil in their cars at all. They just
pour in another quart when it gets low. When their engines fail, they
are just getting what they deserve.

You haven't priced a new 2.7 liter V6.
When they fail, it's not just a matter of fixing what breaks. Usually a
completely rebuilt engine is needed. $5000 sounds just about right for
a turnkey installation of a rebuilt 2.7.

Re: Dodge Strattus 2001-Engine Bad
5 grand is still alot of money for a motor in a stratus.I could buy a
mopar crate motor with about 400hp for that much and still have a couple
hundred dollars left to get a old car to put it in.I have a stratus
(2000) with the 2.4L dohc motor i love it. From what i have heard the
motor in my car is a really good motor. One more thing is the 2.7L motor
the same in all DC cars

It's the same basic motor but changes were made in the block casting,
depending on whether it was meant to be installed in a lateral mounting,
as in your Stratus, or a longitudinal mount, as in the Intrepid and
Concorde. You can NOT interchange the two types.
