BMW: Do you leave the a/c on in an e30 when turning the engine off?

Do you leave the a/c on in an e30 when turning the engine off?

I've always meant to ask this. My dad always taught me to turn off the air
conditioning in your car a minute or two before you arrive at your
destination and shut off the car. But I've noticed that people with newer
cars just turn off the engine with their a/c left on.

I have an '89 325i, and can't find anything about this in the manual.
    Advice appreciated,

    Cordo

Some newer cars switch the fan on a while after you have parked to dry the
system to prevent the build up of fungi/bacteria so don't be surprised to
hear your car humming away a few minutes after you have switched it off.
Volvo do this I believe. I don't know if BMW do.

Your father is a very wise man and you should listen to what he has to tell
you. Doing as he says will allow the condenser to dry out a bit before you
switch off the engine thus not leaving it sitting with stagnant water in
it. This will prevent algae growing and giving you the "wet laundry basket"
smell when you switch it back on again.

It will also mean that you aren't prone to starting the engine again the
next time with the A/C switched on. This causes unnecessary load on the
car's battery which it could well do without during startup.

Most people don't do these things because...

    a) They are stupid and have no understanding of how an engine even works
let alone how an A/C compressor/system works.

    b) They are driving a company car or leased/hire purchase car that they
know damn well they're only going to be having for the next year or two at
the most and they just don't give a shit about extra wear & tear - even the
most abused modern car will last for only 2 years without any drama.

    c) They are just plain lazy and can't be arsed remembering to press a
button before they actually put the car away in the garage for the night.

    d) They didn't have your father giving them good advice.

    e) As they're driving home they're talking on their mobile phone ordering a
pizza for dinner and dreaming about what reality TV show they're going to
be watching on tele tonight instead of actually concentrating on the job at
    hand.

There won't be anything in the owner's manual about it. Car manufacturers
know very well the fact in b) above. They don't want your car to last > 10
years, for then you won't buy a new one. The manufacturers want your car to
self-destruct just outside the warranty period so you'll be moved to buy
another one. It's a disposable society and nowhere is this more obvious
than in the modern car industry - especially with legislation making
perfectly good 4 y.o. cars scrap in many markets in the world.

You misspelled "evaporator". It's on the low-pressure side of the compressor,
located in the passenger compartment. The condenser, otoh, is in front of the
    radiator, on the high-pressure side.

Yeah fair enough. I wasn't thinking obviously, but if that's the worst
