    Re: Diesel Liberty Mileage

I bought a Liberty CRD 3 weeks ago. I've gotten 22 mpg so far, with about
1000 miles on the odometer. I drive 65-75mph with probably 85% highway.
I'm hoping the mpg will rise when the engine is more broken in. The guy
who said he's getting 40mpg has been breathing too many diesel fumes.

Thanks. FWIW, I reliably get 18 mpg on my 2003 Liberty (gas, obviously). My
driving is roughly 60% short trips, maybe 10-15% on gravel/dirt/mud/farm,
and 25-30% highway. I'm very interested in a diesel Liberty, but I'd really
want to see 25-30 mog or better to justify the extra expense. My diesel
1988 GMC Suburban got 23-25 mpg when it was 10 years old, so I naturally
    expect something better than that.

    How's the acceleration?

    Re: Diesel Liberty Mileage

There have been a number of articles on the Jeep Liberty diesel (think Truck
Trend was one of them I read) and the mileage on the highway was 26-ish.
Not particularly good for a diesel, but better than gas for a SUV. A friend
of mine that works for Cummins on the 5.9 liter RAM engine says the
Liberty's diesel is a very old Italian design that's been upgraded with a
more modern injection system, but that it's basically "old technology." So,
it's not going to be pushing the mileage limits possible with a modern
diesel. All that said, from what I've read the diesel makes a hell of an
off-road vehicle for the Liberty and the mileage is still better than with
    the gas engine.
