Toyota: Is the dealer telling the truth?

Is the dealer telling the truth?

My father in law owns Toyota Siena 2002.

Recently, someone (in the parking lot) cracked the plastic casing of the
driver-side mirror. The mirror mechanism is still working well - it moves as
it should when it is controlled with the mirror switch. The plastic case is
still in place, but it moves slightly freely about the mirror.

When we took the car to the dealer, he said that they do not replace only
the plastic casing itself. Instead, he said that they could replace the
whole plastic structure (including the plastic mirror base, the window
moulding, and whatever else comes with it) for Cdn. $350.

Is the dealer telling the truth or he just does not want to bother with it -
perhaps replacing the casing itself is too small of a job to make any money?

    Thanks

    Artur

Same thing happened to my dad and his 2000 Camry. Cracked the casing (on
someone else's car which had no damage) and had to replace the entire thing.

I'd check and see how much a body shop will charge to "fix" it.

When you buy a new one it will come already painted in the
right collor! Order from one of the online discount OEM
    dealers and save 20-30%.

Warranty doesn't cover accident damage, vandalism, etc. Although I
see instances on a daily basis of customers trying to get sucn things
covered under warranty. My fave was the Celica owner who jumped a
divider at 75 mph and expected warranty to fix the tweaked out
    suspension.

    Probably is telling the truth.

Here is a long-shot solution you can try. It will take some salesmanship on
your part and may not work after all:

Take the mirror apart so you can see the inside of the molding that is the
mirror housing. Inside you will find some information that should include a
turn-screw or pin-punch calendar that shows the month and year the molding
was made. It also will show what kind of plastic the part is made of
(probably ABS in your case). It will show a part number (or two), which you
may need for the next step.

If you are very lucky, you should also find a logo, or even the name of the
manufacturer of the part. Not all parts have one. If you do not find a name
or logo, you are SOL. If you *do* find this, you can use that to locate
that manufacturer. A phone call, lots of persistence and sweet-talking
*may* get you one of those parts, *if* they still have bins of them on the
floor, and *if* they recognize the part number you got from the last step,
and *if* they can give you a part and not get in trouble for it. If the
part is still in production, you won't need the part number, as all the
engineers will know that project anyway.

Since they are making 2004s now, it is likely that the molding was changed
from the 2002 model year, so you would need to draw from stock from the
warehouse, which is going to be infinitely more difficult to get.

    Where was your car made?

Re: Is the dealer telling the truth?

Interesting idea. I need to ask where it is made, but I suspect it is
    assembled in US.

On the other note (perhaps some other people are interested), I found the
    following site
    http://www.toyotaautobodypartstore.com/cgi-bin/auto-body-parts/TOSIENNATY50EL9803.html
which advertises the mirror for US$89 which is these days like Cdn$125. With
taxes and shipping I assume that we are looking at about $160. Then, I could
get it installed in a small (non-toyota) shop for about $50. Saving of about
    $150. Not too bad.

    Thanks all for the replies.
