Pontiac: Dealer Parts Prices

    Dealer Parts Prices

Had the water pump replaced this week at the dealer. I know, but no
time to do it myself. Anyway, they charged me 190.51 for the pump and
about $77 EACH for the belts! This is for a 98 GTP so yes, two belts.

Prices I have found from other dealer sites on the net tell me the pump
is about 113 list and the belts each list about $48.

Can dealers set their parts prices that far above "list"? Do I have a
beef to take up with the Service manager or should I let it go?

    Thanks,
    ---Matt

Dealers can set whatever price they want, if you pay it. It's
up to you to do some wheeling and dealing. In a lot of the
dealerships that I've worked in, the parts department will
actually charge customers about 10% "above" the recommended
retail price (which is already inflated about 100%)

I think that I would go back and talk to the service manager.
Be prepared with some concrete pricing and see what
happens. What usually happens is that 99% of the
customers don't bitch, the 1% that do, will get whatever
they want....as it's not worth the hassle and it's a small
percentage that actually bitches about it.

    Re: Dealer Parts Prices

Did the prices you mention include the labor? Or was it just the parts
    cost?

When I bought a water pump for my 3800 last August at a Chevy dealer a
friend works at it was $111.16 LIST price, my cost was $84.23 ( with
    friends discount ).
I put the water pump on myself

The Serpentine Belt I bought ( same place & with the discount ) last
April was $40.98 LIST price, my cost was $31.06

I don't know it there is any differance between a non SC 3800 water pump
and yours, If yours is the same as mine and list was $111 for mine, and
you paid $80 over list, then you did get ripped.

What was the labor cost ?

True, dealers can set whatever price they want. The price book calls it
'suggested retail'. The other comment about the price being already marked
up 100% is just plain wrong. There is usually about a 40% markup from
dealer cost. So a part that retails for $140 costs the dealer about $100.
In my area there used to be a 25% discount to assorted resellers.

Interestingly, when I worked for a national parts chain I found out where
the real markup is! For insance, a name brand replacement exhaust system
would cost the store about $30, we would sell for about $70 to the mechanic,
who would charge about $140 plus labor to the car owner!

Ya figure eh? I've been working for over 23 years in GM dealerships.
I'd say I have a pretty good idea of what the markup is from dealer
cost to retail. 40% it aint, unless you are talking about big items
    like engines and transmissions.

I get cost + 10% pricing on all the parts that I personally buy.
Again, this gives me a birds eye view of what the mark up
is on GM parts at the dealership.

I bought a water pump for my 97 Bonneville a few years ago, I remember cost
about $110 from dealership. I installed myself. I wouldn't be surprised if
that water pump cost the dealership $30 max.

I heard somewhere that if you were to built a car by buying all the parts
separately it would be triple the cost of a new one.

    Re: Dealer Parts Prices

Dealers should `nt charge above suggested manufacture`s list price. I`m
not sure of the price of the pump, but most serpentine belts are around
$50.00 . I would aproach the Service Manager and have him explain the
    bill to you.
