    Yes Frank

I love the country but that was the tongue in cheek reputation that the 70's
Golf had in the UK and most of Euro land too.

Don't you remember your HISTORY? if you are referring to the Hitler bit. The
    car bit is true.

Things have got better but you go back and have a real check - don't rely on
your feelings for the "mother" country - things were BAD in the 70/80 years.
Much better now (I hope) although you still have cash flow problems and
    unemployment.

When I was in Germany a few years back almost 100% of the BMWs and Mercedes
were debadged. I drove a 750i at the time and it was debadged. When I asked
my German hosts about it they said that it was because it was a custom not to
show your wealth or bragg about how expensive your car was.

Under discussion is an innocuous topic. How do you manage to introduce Mr
H? I thought that's more a feature in emotive slanging matches where the
end of the argument is signified by a swear word or ref to Mr H and/or his
    political party.

Hugh, you have been watching too many repeats of a particular Fawlty Towers
    episode...

    Tut tut.

    Hi Dori

I tried to send off NG but you hide your identity!

How did Mr. Hitler come into it?

I take it that you missed some of the earlier posts?

The discussion was about de-badging - the first paragraph has been affirmed
albeit by saying that there is no need to boast about the size of your
engine/pay packet??????? Ever been to Germany? Wot a load of old tosh!

    What I said was - >>>>-----------------------------------------------------

It was / is quite normal in Germany for company executives to have unbadged cars
because the workers don't like to see the fat cats driving around in things
    their hard work bought them.

The executives had (might still have) their cars damaged due to unrest of the
workers when the German economy was at it's lowest - 1970 - present day (not
forgetting that was also the root cause of Hitler's rise to power too).

Wether it is still the case I cannot say but I can remember when the VW Golf was
the best "hand built" car in Germany - Why? Because every other car had to be
stripped and re-built to rectify the production line faults (crap workmanship)
due to worker unrest. Slightly different today - robots don't strike!

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Herr Hitler's (Mr. Shicklegruber?) rise to power came about due to the high
unemployment among German nationals and the massive amount of immigrant workers
from Poland and the Ukrane - many were also Jewish.

THe reference was about the problems in the German economy in the 70s and even
now while thay are still trying to embrace the old East Germany and it's workers
    - something they always wanted but wasn't prepared when it was thrust upon them.

Credit to the Germans - they are coping well but not quite out of the doldrums
    yet.

    Hi

I did see your earlier post but replied to your second ref to Adolph. My
point is that the connection between Herr Schickelgruber (note spelling),
industrial dissatisfaction 30 years ago and today's tendency to leave badges
off is rather tenuous... I like my cars 'debadged' -- the manufacturer's
logo on the bonnet, boot lid and wheels is quite sufficient...

Also not sure about relevance of detour to the question of the quality of a
Golf... but offtopic topics add fun to the dreary headlined topics... :-)

Well, maybe debadging is not dreary as there are at least three separate
    threads on this running presently.

How do you de-badge a Hummer?

Well, it requires at least two different shades of green
(preferably 3) and some black spray paint. You and some friends could
do it right in the back yard. Consume a moderate amount of alcohol and
just paint it up. If you can find a 50 cal ring mount for the roof and
don't mind cutting the whole, it will help the overall appearance a
    great deal.

PS - This only works on the ORIGINAL Hummer. The H2 is nothing more
than a narrow hummer lookalike body on a pickup truck frame.

In Germany nobody debadges a BMW. People order them debadged. So a debadged
