Ford Explorer: Cruise Control lights

Cruise Control lights
Has anyone ever replaced the steering wheel cruise control lights (On/Off)
on a '98 Explorer? I was able to open the housing for the On/Off switch,
but I don't see any lights. I assume they must be diodes.
Thanks!

Re: Cruise Control lights
They are in a little blue housing piece, you twist it and it comes out.
I hear the bulbs are only available if you get new control switches, $50 for
both sides (together).

Re: Cruise Control lights
Not true, there is a little light inside that attaches to the board itself,
it twists out. Go to your dealership.
Be warned when putting the rubber button back in, make sure you don't break
the "CHEAP" plastic tabs. I did and now my button stays on, but isn't secure
and quite honestly pisses me off. Anyone know how to possible fix this? Of
course the tabs broke off the entire plastic housing not the button. I was
thinking of super gluing some plastic on to try and create the tabs. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Cruise Control lights
How big is the light? While sitting in traffic the other day, I pull the
On/Off housing partially open, but all I saw on the board was the two
button. Also, do you have to pull the whole On/Off cover to change the
bulb, or can you access the bulb by just opening part of the housing (like a
flap) with the part closest to the horn/airbag still attached?

Re: Cruise Control lights
The light bulb goes through the board. On the side you see, there is a
black plastic hex knob that is the back of the light bulb. Twist it and
pull it out. It is the same size as the dashboard lights, but I have been
unable to the bulb in green anywhere (except for the whole assembly for
$50).
The best way to get at it is to remove the front cover of the steering wheel
(including the airbag), otherwise getting the cover back on is a PITA.

Re: Cruise Control lights
Do you have instructions to remove the front cover? I haven't really looked
at the back of the steering wheel yet for bolts! I guess you should
disconnect the battery though first.

Re: Cruise Control lights
Go to your local dealer and pick up two bulbs (one for each side), part #
E5RY-13466-BA. If you can't find them in stock locally, I got mine from
www.fordpartsnetwork.com for less than $4.00 each. They do charge a minimum
$7.00 handling fee though so it's more econimical if you order other things
as well. Even still $15 for both bulbs shipped is less than the $50 your
dealer wants for the whole switch. As mentioned above, it is by far easier
to remove the airbag & cover when replacing the bulbs in the switches. If
you don't, you'll spend a lot more time just trying to get the rubber switch
cover back on correctly (and it still probably won't seat right). To remove
the airbag and cover, disconnect a lead to your battery and let it sit for 5
minutes (per the Ford service manual) to deplete the battery backup storage.
Next, remove the two screws on the sides of your steering wheel that are
under the plastic covers (one on each side). The airbag and cover will slide
straight out. Disconnect the connector and put the airbag out of yoru way.
The two switches are easily accessable once you get to this point.

Re: Cruise Control lights
Hi,
Thanks for the info. I was able to locate some bulbs using your(Ford) part
number. Quit a variance in price. The dealer that had them in stock was the
cheapest a $2 each. The original blue cap(Plastic) wasn't on the new bulb. I
managed to remove the blue cover from original and it seems to be ok. Any
suggestions for cover replacement cause I doubt I could get another
refitting out of the original.
Thanks again for your input.

Re: Cruise Control lights
No, I reused my blue cover from my old bulb as well. It got a small rip in
it when I removed it from the original bulb, but it still went on the new
bulb fine. With the small tear in it, it can be removed pretty easily now so
the next time I have to replace my bulbs I don't anticipate any problems.

Cruise Control Lights
In a 1997 Explorer, I have burned out bulbs in the steerignwheel cruise controls.
How do I gain access to the bulbs. Do the covers come off?
