Cruise cable causing accelorator to 'stick'

The cable on the cruise control of my '93 E34 525 is jumping out of the
housing on the throttle side causing the RPM's to rev and 'stick'. This has
happened twice in the past 2 weeks. The cable just seats in the housing and
can easily be pushed in or out - not secured to the housing.

Is the cable sold as a separate unit or does it maybe just need to be
    cleaned and lubed.

The cable on my '91 525i *can't* come out. There are a couple of clips
and adjustment nuts - maybe you are missing them?

Floyd, its actually the cable housing (cable surround) that is slipping out
the throttle housing. The wire cable end is secure.

Hmmm. On mine, the throttle cable and the CC cable are held by clips
and adjustment nuts to a plate. The cables then run out and are
    individually
clipped - using a nylon gadget that holds the cable-end's knob - through
attachment points on the throttle butterfly lever. Both (or either) cable
    is
then able to move the throttle's butterfly. Kind of hard to explain w/o a
picture. Sounds like you're isn't like mine, although I'd find that
    surprising.
