Cost of replacing timing belt on GS 300 ?

    All,

    I am thinking to buy a 98 GS 300 with 88K for $14K. I called Lexus
dealer to see what service is coming up, and they told me timing belt
need to be replaced at 90K. The cost is $650. Is this typical price ?
I thought it was kinda high, maybe Toyota dealer can do it cheaper ?
This car should have the same engine as Supra, right ?

    Thanks
    Chris

    Chris,

$650 sounds pretty reasonable to me. Yes, a Toyota dealer should be able to
handle it, but a Lexus dealer probably sees ten IS300s and GS300s for every
Supra that the Toyota dealer sees, so I'd recommend you have Lexus do it. I
doubt a Toyota dealer would be significantly cheaper although you could call
    around.

You might want to double check the factory manual, because it's
possible that the timing belt is a chain and doesn't require
    replacement in that engine.

Also, be careful on this one-- the timing belt might be $650, but
every time I've had one changed (an 82 Celica, 89 Accord, 96 RAV4) the
dealer also recommends replacing the water pump and all the reqular
fan belts, since they have to be removed to get to the timing belt
anyway. When all is said and done, the timing belt accounts for maybe
half the cost. So this repair will really end up costing you
    $1000-$1300.

That sounds very expensive considering that I just had the belt changed on
my Sienna at the dealer for $175, including parts. If anything the belt on
the GS/IS 3.0L6 looks more accessible than the belt on the Sienna's
transverse V6. The GS300's engine has a water pump that is driven by a
standard v-belt rather than the timing belt and the pump can be changed
without disturbing the timing belt - don't let them sell you that crock!
