Where do you live Rochester NY? Buy one guaranteed for
life --- Walker (muffler only) or Bosal (from Olympic Auto
Parts - guaranteed for life).

The one from Toyota IS LIFETIME! Those "other" lifetime ones you mention
DONT include hangers, labor etc, just the muffler, they will still get
$30+ out of ya while the Toyota covers everything!

And those other "lifetime" ones are crappily and cheaply built. You will be
back in there every spring and every fall getting yet something else
patched up. And those patches WON'T be covered by the warranty!
My advice is to bite the bullet and get the OEM exhaust. You can leave it
alone for five years minimum in the Rust Belt. No more aftermarket exhausts
for me.
As an aside, I notice that the Tercel doesn't even get any black residue in
the tailpipe when it's driven. It stays shiny silver. What gives??

Yep. Right on the money.
With our humid air most of the year, the exhaust eventually fills up with
acidic moisture and rots from the inside out. The hangers dissolve and the
system starts hanging wrong, which stresses it and leads to cracks in the
welds and pipes. External corrosion on the pipes happens at the welds
first. Many leaks occur at weld seams, especially at the inlet and outlets
of the muffler.

Re: Corolla Muffler life expect.
I just got rid of my 92 corolla (original owner).
I recall the exhaust being a piece of crap in general.
The original rusted out about 2 days after the 3 year
warranty. My midas replacement lasted less than 1 year.
I remember thinking "Didn't I just replace that?" and checking
my bill and seeing, "yes, 8 months ago". There were
several years of replacement after replacement.
Now I stuck with Midas (probably due to the bait of a free muffler)
and in the final couple of years the exhaust
lasted longer than normal. Did they change their mufflers? I don't know.
I did move jobs to a shorter drive, but I would think short drives increase
corrosion.
I'm inclined to check out the dealers offer and warranty as suggested.

*giggles*
I'm suprised my exhaust didn't rot to nothing on the Fiero then - it had NO
cat, was normally only doing short trips, never had a heavy engine load (the
car is half the weight of the car the engine was designed for) and so on.
Then again, the Corolla's exhaust is still in good order, and all my other
cars have had good exhausts with exception to my '81 Carina, the rear
muffler had been exchanged for a bigbore freeflow type contraption that was
rusted and beaten... who'd want a 4" tip honestly?
