    Which Coolant to Use?

What is the general experience with various coolants?
I know BMW says to only use theirs but what are the other options?
I believe the use of coolants with silicates and phosphates cause some type
of problems although I don't know the specifics.
There is also an extended life coolant (similar to DEX-COOL) available from
Prestone that is silicate and phophate free but I was told that this may
attack the silicone gaskets in the engine (hard to believe).
Needless to say, this is a bit confusing. Does anyone have any performance
    data?

In the US, BMW coolant is made by Valvoline and is actually Zerex G48
coolant. The problem is you probably won't be able to find Zerex G48
on the market (let us know if you do find it). Also, the cost would
probably be close to what BMW charges (BMW coolant msrp is $13.50,
good luck, alot of dealers charge in the $15-20/gal range). For more,
go to Zerex G 48 antifreeze here:

Why in the world would you take any chance on causing very expensive problems
to save a few dollars on coolant every 2 or 3 years?

Whatever you do, stay away from any Dexcool or equivalent coolants - they are
known to cause problems with BMW cooling systems. You should be ok with normal
high quality "green" coolant if you change it every couple of years, but I can
see no reason not to use the BMW "blue" stuff.

I don't have enough information to know that "normal high quality
'green' coolant" would be OK in an engine with a mapped
thermostat (any recent BMW engine, IOW) where the coolant
temperature gets higher than in an engine without one. Do you?

No, sorry. My point of reference is only to E34's (1989 to 1995 5-series) and
not recent bimmers. Even then all I have for "information" is the opinion of
several excellent BMW independents who feel that using the "green" coolant and
changing it every couple of years is ok. The fact that they use it in their
bimmers is fairly good evidence to me.

However, that being said, I still use the BMW coolant in both of my E34's - it
simply isn't enough of a cost difference, to me, even if there is little or no
risk. And that is what I always recommend to any other BMW owners.
